UOIT was founded in 2002 by virtue of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology Act, 2002, under the jurisdiction of the Government of Ontario. It is situated at Oshawa in an area of 400 acres in Durham region of Ontario. The influx of students towards the post-secondary Science and Technology streams caused the Education Department to put into extra initiative in order to take advantage of the flow and at the same time handle it gracefully. It is under the then set of steps that the university’s bill was presented and passed by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. The institution is currently affiliated with AUCC, IAU, COU, USports, OUA Fields Institute, Ontario Network of Women in Engineering, CBIE and CARL. The university is among the top 50 universities of Canada and has been ranked among the top 220 universities of World for Engineering by the U.S. News.

Infrastructure, Campus and Courses

The campus of UOIT has been designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects and is distinguishable as North Campus (FBIT, FESNS, FEAS, FS, OPG, SIRC, CRWC, etc), Automotive Centre of Excellence, Energy Research Centre, Downtown Campus (FSSH, FE, UBISC), Regent Theatre and Student Housing. The campus is built on the basis of sustainability and has a geothermal heating and cooling system, solar panels and green roofs. The university offers a wide range of flexible undergraduate and graduate programs under 7 main faculties, post-doctoral degrees, and research opportunities. The institution provides undergraduate courses in Nuclear Engineering, and often collaborates with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, Bruce Power, Cameco Corporation, Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Ontario Power Generation and SNC - Lavalin.

Accomplishments and Alumni

The institution is well-known for its research related activity. Some of the active research includes Ecologically sensitive ecosystems (Dr. Andrea Kirkwood), Core Body Temperatures in Paralympic Athletes (Dr. Heather Springer), TeachingCity: City Idea Lab (Oshawa City project) and collaboration with ACE and IU for Glass House Systems. The university hosts Undergraduate Research Awards Recognition Event, which was last held in 2018 and recognised subjects included Medicinal Cannabis and Development of Robotics System for Rehabilitation of Musculoskeletal Disorders. The institute is also the alma mater of Kate Beirness. Apart from the academics the students also enjoy extra-curricular activities and have been amazing hosts for The Cahinsmokers, Wolfgang Gartner, Tommy Trash, Anders and many more artists in CampusFest.

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

The overall international students presence in the university goes upto 25%. The institute is known for its deliberate and proud display of support of LGBTQ+ community, and for the efforts in order to imbibe equity and diversity in the lives of students. There are career and life counselling services available for the students and the university takes steps in order to ensure that the cultural demographics of the student population could be as diverse as possible so that cross-cultural integrity and understanding of the students could benefit from it. There are 3 fraternities and 6 sororities active within the campus of university. UOIT helps in career preparation of the students by offering internships, workshops, co-ops, events (seminars and guest lectures) and one-on-one support to the students.
