The foundation of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) was laid in1910 by the then Governor of Hong Kong. Finally, HKU was officially opened in 1912 with Arts, Engineering and Medicine as its first three Faculties to offer various courses and became the oldest tertiary education institution in Hong Kong. Today, HKU holds an international recognition for its remarkable contribution in the field of education and research and is continuously ranked among the top universities of the world. The QS World University Rankings 2021 of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) is 22. 

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

The Main Campus of HKU is also referred to as the Centennial Campus and expands across an area of  17.7 hectares. Besides, there is a Medical Campus covering an area of 4.2 hectares. Apart from the Academic Space that occupies 43.8% of the total space of the main campus there are Central Libraries, Central Administration and Maintenance Area, Student and Staff Amenities Area, Space for Sports Facilities, Student Halls of Residence and Staff Quarters,  Museum, HKU Press etc. The undergraduate and postgraduate level courses offered by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) are conducted by 11 Faculties divided into various departments. It includes the Graduate School and LKS Faculty of Medicine.

One of the reasons why the  University of Hong Kong (HKU) is the centre of attraction for international students is its excellent employment rate for full-time graduates and undergraduate students which is almost 100%. The Employer reputation survey score in Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings 2021 of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) is 96. 

COVID-19 Response

The latest updates released by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) for 2021 academic year is as follows:   

  • University of Hong Kong is delivering the courses in either hybrid or online mode for the 2021 academic year. The decision has been taken by the individual Department and School depending on the need of the course and class capacity. 

  • The robust campus infection control measures remain in place for the safety and wellbeing of everyone.

  • HKU continues to monitor the COVID 19 situation and has made necessary arrangements for those who are visiting the campus. Everyone needs to be aware of the guidelines defined by the university and follow the infection control protocols.   

  • HKU is following the guidelines defined by HKSAR Government for quarantine measures to be taken by international travellers before visiting the campus. Those arriving in Hong Kong via the Hong Kong International Airport will be required to proceed

  • to the Temporary Specimen Collection Centre (TSCC) and will have to take a 14-day compulsory quarantine even if the test report is negative.

  • Students in the campus are allowed to use the Library, Learning Common and small classrooms for self study.

Scholarship for International Students at University of Hong Kong (HKU)

A number of university-based and external scholarship facilities are available to international students based on nationality, area of studies, gender and the availability of funds.

International students can use the search function on the HKU Scholarships page to check the list of scholarships available for them based on the programme they have chosen to study and eligibility. 

Prospective students are considered for entrance scholarships or fellowships based on academic merit. The scholarship is offered by individual departments and faculty. Applicants are encouraged to directly contact the Undergraduate/ Postgraduate Admissions Office or Graduate School for scholarship related enquiries. 

The scholarship available for international students representing any nationality is as follows: 

HKU Foundation Scholarships for Outstanding International Students

HKU Foundation Scholarships are available for international students enrolled in international full-time undergraduate degree programmes at HKU. It is a merit-based scholarship offered to outstanding international students. 

There is no need to apply for the scholarship as deserving students are automatically nominated for the award.

The amount of scholarship is not specific and it is renewed only if the applicant maintains a satisfactory academic performance.
