Admission Process in Nepal

As Nepal is turning into one of the most preferred destinations to study MBBS by Indian students, the MCI approved MBBS colleges in Nepal are becoming popular. The fact that Indian students do not have to go through the hectic student visa process to study MBBS in Nepal makes medical education in the country even easier to access by international students. The colleges in the country come with one more feature that attracts a number of Indian students to study Medicine in Nepal, which is, MBBS colleges of Nepal are not only approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI) but also from the World Health Organization (WHO), etc. 

Unlike other destinations for Medicine abroad, applying to medical colleges in Nepal is not a complicated process. In order to get admission in the colleges here, students will have to clear certain subject-tests like National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Other than that, even the application process is not complicated here. 

Exams Required to Study Medicine in Nepal

Even though the language of the medium for MBBS in Nepal Universities is English, Indian candidates do not have to qualify the English language proficiency tests to get admission to these universities. Following are the exams that students must take to become eligible for applying to the medical universities in Nepal. 

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Tests is a national level entrance examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Students who aspire to get admission in MBBS / MD programmes in not only India but also in Nepal will have to appear in this exam. Earlier, the exam was mandatory for Indian medical colleges only but now, the Indian government has made it mandatory for the medical colleges of Nepal as well. All the colleges affiliated to Kathmandu University accept Indian students directly on the basis of their NEET scores. The accepted scores for NEET at Nepal medical universities may vary from college to college. 

University Entrance Examination

The entrance examination for MBBS in Nepal depends upon the college students have preferred to get into. For some universities, the entrance exam is mandatory even after taking NEET, whereas, in some universities, the entrance examination is not necessary. All the colleges affiliated with Tribhuvan University conduct an Entrance test (IOM-TU). The test is generally conducted in the month of August. In order to qualify the exam, candidates must score more than 50%. Depending upon the marks scored by students in the entrance examination, the allocation of seats is done. The exam is generally conducted in the month of August or September. 

Eligibility Criteria for MBBS in Nepal

The eligibility criteria for MBBS in Nepalese Universities may defer when it comes to the academic performance of the students. Although, there are some criteria that are common in every college of the country. Candidates who meet the eligibility norms laid down by the universities will be applicable to apply to the various MBBS programmes offered by Nepal universities. The common eligibility criteria are:

  • The student should have completed 17 years of age to the date of admission.

  • For general category students, the upper age limit is 25 years while for the candidates belonging to SC/OBC/ST category, the limit is 30 years. 

  • The candidate should have completed senior secondary with Biology / Biotechnology, Physics and Chemistry as compulsory subjects. 

  • Students should have scored a minimum of 50% marks aggregate in all three compulsory subjects. 

  • The minimum percentage requires is 40% for the candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBS students. 

  • The students must also have studied English as a compulsory language subject as prescribed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT).

  • Candidates must have their valid NEET scorecards. 

  • The candidates who have completed their higher secondary from open school are not permitted to appear in NEET.

Documents Required to Study MBBS in Nepal

The documents required by international students to study MBBS in Nepal are mentioned below. Students should refer to the list below.

  • Marksheets or Certificates of High School and Higher Secondary.

  • A nationality certificate (Aadhaar can now be used as a nationality certificate in Nepal)

  • Passport (although a student doesn’t need to have a passport to study in Nepal but, it is suggested to carry one)

  • Birth Certificate or a document that proves the same

  • NEET Score Card

  • Eligibility Certificate by the Medical Council of India (MCI)

  • Passport size photograph

Application Process to Study MBBS in Nepal

Just like eligibility criteria, the admission process for MBBS in the medical universities of Nepal may also vary. Although there is not much of a difference in the process. We have broken down the admission process to study MBBS in Nepal to make it easy to comprehend for international students. Candidates can refer to the following steps to get admission in Nepal in MBBS courses:

  1. In order to enrol themselves to MBBS courses in Nepal, students are required to get an Eligibility Certificate undertaken by the Medical Council of India. 

  2. After that, international students can apply either via online or offline mode. 

  3. Once, students have applied, they will then have to take a selection/entrance test conducted by the preferred university.

  4. On the basis of the results of the exam, the students will be allocated seats in the deserving college. 

  5. Students will also have to qualify rigorous interview rounds to confirm their seats. 

  6. On the basis of the collective scores the interview rounds and entrance exam, the admission authority of a university decides whether a student deserves a seat or not. 

The number of seats for Indian students in the medical universities of Nepal may vary from 20-50. So, there are high chances that a student gets selected to pursue MBBS.
