With a history of over 90 years, St. Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University is a renowned medical school and the oldest independent pediatric university in the world. It was formerly known as Leningrad Pediatric Medical Institute (LPMI) and received its university status only in 2012. SPbSPMU has accreditation and state license to provide training in english language, medicine with specialisation in pediatrics according to the state standards. The Russian Science Index ranks the university third among the top medical organisations in the Russian Federation and 25th among the top scientific organisations in the world. In June 2005, SPbSPMU was included in the top 100 Russian universities and honored with a golden medal of European Quality. Medical students at the university participate in research as members of student scientific associations and academic societies.
Infrastructure, Campus & Courses
Located in St. Petersburg, Russia, SPbSPMU has several faculties including the faculties of medical science, clinical psychology, stomatology, pediatrics, dentistry and postgraduate & additional professional education. Medical students at the university spend their first three years of training in the areas of liberal, disease-prevention, science and biomedical sciences. Further, they are exposed to extensive laboratory training in the fields of general chemistry, microbiology, physiology, pathology and more. As of today, the university has a total of 70 departments, four dormitories, local libraries, classrooms, reading and sports halls, a multi-purpose university hospital comprising five clinics, and so on. SPbSPMU stands distinct because of its regard for ontogenetic features in medical science studies and modern diagnostic technologies including MRI, US-scanners, multislice computed tomography, modern radioisotope laboratory, installation for radiologists, etc which train researchers at an advanced level.
Accomplishments & Alumni
By the year 2000, over 25,000 physicians graduated from the St. Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University. Currently, it trains 4,000 medical students every year. Scientists of the university have played an important role in contributing to the development of basic sciences and clinical pediatric studies. Some of them include F.I.Valker, D.D.Lokhov, A.G.Knorre in Morphology; E.S.London in Pathophysiology; V.A.Valdman in Internal Diseases; V.V.Palevsky in Medical Demographics; LITchi ulitskaya in Paedology, etc. SPbSPMUs graduates and lecturers have won prizes at international and Russian contests and are also laureates who have successfully made an impact not only at the regional or national level but also internationally.
Student Diversity & Employment Opportunities
Students at St. Petersburg State Pediatric Medical University represent over 50 countries from four continents. For several decades, the university has been serving as an international centre for higher education in the field of medicine. It is closely associated with its hospital, one of the biggest in the Russian Federation, which acts as a scientific base for students enrolled at the university. Students are trained with comprehensive health education to practice medicine as medical specialists, general practitioners, medical researchers and pediatricians. Around 60% of graduates from the university work in a variety of areas in Pediatrics, while the reaiming 40% work in adult medicine or take up experimental medical research.
