Reason being, the cut-throat competition in government medical colleges and the extravagance of private institutions.

In recent years, students have realised that in spite of not getting a preferred seat in one of the medical colleges in India, they can still fulfil their dream of completing an MBBS from a university abroad. The foremost reason for the same is that the fees of medical colleges abroad is incomparable to that of Indian medical colleges. How to Choose the Right University to Study MBBS Abroad?

Here are a few factors you should consider before applying to a university offering MBBS abroad:

Total Expense and Budget: Medical programs usually cost more than any other degree primarily because of the duration of the course. However, public medical schools are comparatively cheaper than private medical schools, be it in India or any other study destination for MBBS. So, before you apply to a medical university, make sure you have a clear idea about its tuition fees. Also, it is important to factor in other expenses as well, which may include food costs, housing, transportation, books, and so on. To ease the financial burden, you may always apply for available scholarships or education loans.

Duration of Course: To complete an MBBS degree in Ukraine, Russia, Philippines, Germany, Kyrgyzstan or Kazakhstan, you will need to spend at least five years. Some universities might offer MBBS that lasts around 5.5 years, while some may last for six years including a one-year internship.

Rankings: When you have decided which country you are going to study MBBS in, you should start looking at national or international ranking lists such as QS World University Rankings or U.S. News & World Report Rankings of the current or previous year. That said, it should not be the deciding factor for you to choose a medical university abroad.

Curriculum: While all MBBS universities offer similar curricula, what actually makes one university stand out is the way they deliver the program. Some may focus more on the traditional way of teaching and some may believe in the importance of both theoretical and hands-on practice. In the traditional method, students are taught different subjects followed by hospital-based learning, lecturers, less self-directed learning, patient contact, full body dissections and more. In an integrated format, students are exposed to the clinical aspect right from the beginning of the course. Lastly, in problem-based learning, students are taught through case-based discussions where they work on patient cases and decide how to solve a set of problems.

Approval and Recognition: This is the most important factor when you are settling on a medical university. The university should be recognised by organizations such as the National Medical Commission (NMC), UNESCO, WHO, IMED and maybe more.
