When Should You Take the GRE Exam?

While it depends entirely on you and the application deadlines of the universities you are applying to, admissions counsellors suggest that an applicant should take their GRE exams at least two months prior to the university deadline. This would allow applicants to retake their GRE exams, if required, and go ahead with the rest of the application process carefully.

Complete the following steps to select the appropriate GRE test centres at the time of registration:

Visit the ETS Website

The very first thing you will have to do is to visit the ETS (Educational Testing Services) website. Navigate through the website to find the GRE exam page.

Go to the GRE Exam Page

Under the 'Products' option on the top of the ETS home page, you will find a link to the GRE exam page. You much click on either the GRE General Test option or the GRE Subject Test option (as per your choice).

Create an ETS Account

Creating an ETS account is important for you to proceed with your exam registration and choose the appropriate GRE exam date.
If you are a new user, you will have to create an account whereas if you are an existing user already, you will simply be required to log in by entering your credentials.

Go to the ‘Find Test Centres and Dates’ Page

After following the steps mentioned above, navigate through the GRE General Test or the GRE Subject Test web pages to find the link to GRE exam centres and dates.
Click on the link and proceed with the process.

Fill out the GRE Exam Application Form

You will have to select the GRE exam type you are interested in attempting this year, from the options available in the dropdown menu.
After that, you will have to enter your location so that you can find a GRE exam centre closest to you.
In the next step, you will have to choose at least two months according to which, you will be shown the available GRE exam dates.
You will then have to enter a Restricted Reservation Code which is optional.
Finally, submit the necessary information by clicking on the ‘Find Available Test Centres and Dates’ option on the GRE exam page.

On submitting the form, you will be redirected to a new page.
Here, you will be presented with all the available GRE exam dates for your selected test and location.

You will have to click on one of the available dates (in green) and select the appropriate GRE exam date as per your convenience.

Go to the home page and look for the ‘Upcoming Tests’ option.

Finally, pay a GRE test date rescheduling fee of $50.

Reschedule GRE Exam Dates by Phone

Call the appropriate Regional Registration Center (RRC) between Monday and Friday.
Commonly, the timing should be between 8 am and 7:45 pm at each of the GRE registration centres.
Be ready with your appointment confirmation number and the full name you used to register for the test.

Conditions to Reschedule GRE Exam Dates

You will have to choose your next GRE exam date within a rolling period of 365 days.
Therefore, your next preferred date should be within one year from your original GRE exam date. For instance, if your original GRE test date was 15th January, you can choose any available date until January 15th of the following year.
