The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is an assessment of English language competency that assesses a candidate's proficiency across four sections: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The exam is offered more than 60 times a year by ETS at accredited test centres across the globe and is recognised by more than 11,500 colleges and other organisations in more than 160 nations.

ETS has not officially specified any academic or other requirements as part of the TOEFL eligibility criteria. However, in order to be eligible to apply to institutions abroad for higher education, candidates must have passed their 10+2 from a recognised board.

Eligibility Criteria for TOEFL 2022

The TOEFL 2022 test, administered all around the world and accepted by universities worldwide, has no specific eligibility criteria prescribed by ETS. Any person, student or immigrant, looking to travel to an English-speaking country to study or settle down in the country, will be required to take the test. Therefore, there is no application required for TOEFL 2022 for any aspiring test-taker, irrespective of their academic or professional background.

Some of these universities that accept TOEFL 2022 scores include Washington State University, Suffolk University, Wolverhampton University, Seton Hill University, and more. It, being an English language proficiency test, is taken by students from across the world to demonstrate their mastery of the English language to pursue higher education in English-speaking countries, as well as countries where English-taught programmes are widely available.

What is the Eligibility Criteria for TOEFL?

As mentioned above, ETS has not defined any specific eligibility criteria, however here are certain things that all TOEFL candidates must make a note of:

  • There are no particular eligibility criteria for the TOEFL 2022 exam.

  • Anyone with a valid passport can register for TOEFL.

Age Limit for TOEFL 2022: There is no minimum or maximum age limit for registering for the TOEFL exam. Candidates of any age can take the TOEFL exam.

Minimum Educational Qualification for TOEFL 2022: ETS has placed no restrictions on the educational qualifications that a candidate must have to register for the TOEFL.

Eligibility for TOEFL iBT at Home

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, ETS, the TOEFL exam's administering authority, has chosen to introduce the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition test in regions where the TOEFL iBT is available for the convenience of students wishing to study abroad. The same service has yet to be launched in mainland China and Iran. 

The TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition Test was created in response to the temporary closure of TOEFL Test Centers owing to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. Candidates must, however, ensure that they meet the ETS registration equipment criteria to be eligible for the TOEFL iBT at Home test.

Equipment Requirements

Computer 

  • You must use a desktop or laptop computer; you cannot use a tablet or mobile device.

  • Multiple monitors or dual screens are not permitted; just one monitor or screen is permitted.

  • A licensed operating system that has been approved. It is not permissible to use unlicensed or test-mode versions.

    • PC: Windows operating system, versions 10 or 8

    • MAC: Mac OS X 10.5 or higher (10.13 High Sierra is recommended)

  • Chrome or Firefox browser

Browser Download and Equipment Check

  • Install the ETS Secure Test Browser on the computer you will be testing on. To fully install the browser, run the file after downloading it. When you see the message "Success! ", you can shut the browser. You have the ETS secure test browser installed.

  • Run the ProctorU Equipment Check from the computer where you will be testing. If you fail the equipment check, you must correct any problems before the test day. Live ProctorU representatives are on hand to assist you.

  • Computer firewalls and security software can disrupt the test delivery software. If you encounter this problem, you may need to disable or adjust your programs before running the test.

Speaker 

  • To hear the proctor, use an internal or external speaker.

  • Headsets or earphones are not permitted.

Microphone 

  • To converse with the proctor, use an internal or external microphone that is not part of a headset.

Camera 

  • A built-in camera in the computer or a standalone webcam can be used.

  • Before the test, the camera must be able to move to display the proctor a 360-degree view of the space, including your tabletop surface.

Environment and Testing Space Requirements

Privacy 

  • During the test, you must be alone in a room with no one else present.

  • The exam cannot be taken in a public place such as a park, internet cafe, or restaurant.

  • Before commencing the test, you must close all doors in the room.

Tabletop and Seating

  • Your computer and keyboard must be placed on a table or desk.

  • Place your table and chair such that the proctor can see the entry to the room. At check-in, the proctor may need you to do this.

  • All things not permitted for use during the test, including cell phones (save when needed for check-in), cameras, notes, and study materials, must be removed from the tabletop and surrounding area. The room's furniture and décor do not need to be removed.

  • You must sit in a regular chair; you are not permitted to sit or lie on a bed, couch, or overstuffed chair.

  • Food and drink are not allowed during the test.

Clothing and Appearance

  • During the exam, your ears and face must be visible and not obscured by hair, a cap, or other materials. The religious hat is permissible as long as your ears are visible throughout the examination. Face masks are not permitted to be worn during check-in or during the at-home testing session.

  • Dress correctly for your examination. The proctor will monitor you via webcam, and your photo will be shared with colleges who get your scores.

  • Before checking in for your exam, you must remove all headphones, smartwatches, face masks, jewellery, tie clips, cuff links, decorative clips, combs, barrettes, headbands, and other hair accessories.

Note-Taking Materials

  • For security reasons, you may not take notes on normal paper.

  • You may take notes using one of the following methods:

    • 1 small desktop whiteboard with an erasable marker but no pencil or pen

    • 1 sheet of paper in a clear sheet protector, with an erasable marker

  • You must show the proctor that all notes have been erased at the end of the test.

Who is a Suitable Candidate for TOEFL?

While TOEFL can be taken by any candidate who wishes to check his/her level of English proficiency, the test has been specially designed and improved to replicate the conditions seen in a university or college during a closed testing environment.

All of the academic content and questions in TOEFL are taken directly, inspired from or recreate from situations that a university student would come across in their day-to-day life on campus.

The TOEFL 2022 tests, evaluate the English proficiency of a candidate at the university level. This is why it is recommended that TOEFL should be taken by candidates who have completed their studies at least secondary school (Class 10th / Standard X) level.

The level of questions and vocabulary in TOEFL 2022 is certainly not considered easy. Any candidate who aims to score well in the exam must ensure that they can communicate properly in the English language including the speaking, reading, listening and writing aspects of formal and informal communication, at a level expected from a university student. Eligibility to Retake the TOEFL

  • There are no prescribed limits on how many times a student can retake the TOEFL.

  • There is only a mandatory 12-day waiting period until a candidate can retake the TOEFL 2022 although one can register for multiple test dates as long as they are not within the 12-day limit.

  • University applicants who take the TOEFL 2022 more than once are under no obligation to disclose all of their scores. Institutions will only have access to the scores selected by the candidate.

Can I take the TOEFL after passing 12th?

Yes, all candidates are eligible to take the TOEFL tests after clearing 12th since ETS does not mention any academic criteria for any of the tests, i.e. TOEFL iBT nor TOEFL Essentials. However, if you are taking the TOEFL tests, it is important to check individual university-specific admission criteria, which includes the type of English Proficiency test accepted for international student admission or other language requirements.

Is there any institute specific eligibility criteria for TOEFL?

No, there is no institute-specific eligibility criteria for TOEFL, as it is a widely accepted English proficiency test, accepted by universities across the globe. However, each university abroad will specify a minimum TOEFL score requirement for admissions of non-English speaking international students. All aspirants are advised to go through the individual admission requirements before applying for TOEFL or any other tests.

Do I need to create an ETS account to check availability of test dates for TOEFL at home?

Yes, if you wish to check the availability of TOEFL Test at Home, you will need to create an account with ETS, which can be done via the official website for TOEFL iBT. It should noted that if you are planning to attempt the TOEFL iBT Test at Home, you must make sure you meet the environment and equipment requirements as specified by ETS.

How many times can I take the TOEFL?

According to the latest TOEFL iBT retake policy, all candidates can book a retest multiple times in a year. However, candidates must ensure a 3-day gap between the test dates. It should be noted that even if you cancel the previous test scores, you will still be required to maintain a 3-day gap between the retest dates.

Is it necessary to attempt TOEFL?

What are the minimum educational qualifications needed for TOEFL?
