Following IDP's acquisition of IELTS India from British Council, agents of the Association of Australian Education Representatives in India have been concerned about use of IELTS testing data by IDP for student placement and more.

AAERI Signs MoU to Promote TOEFL in India

The Association of Australian Education Representatives in India (AAERI) has signed an MoU with ETS TOEFL to promote TOEFL in India after IDP bought India IELTS business from British Council for 130m.

Agents of AAERI have been concerned about IDPs acquisition of IELTS in India which will make it the sole distributor of IELTS testing in the country from July 25 this year.

After the announcement was made by British Council in the beginning of July, AAERI has signed an MoU to make sure that other tests are also available for Indian students. AAERI president Ravi Lochan Singh, in a letter to members, said that the organisation is also trying to partner up with Pearsons PTE.

In addition, AAERI is also getting in touch with universities and visa offers to suggest them not to choose IELTS over other English language tests such as the TOEFL.

AAERI in India has now signed an MoU with OneStep Global, a firm representing TOEFL in India, said Siddharth Iyer, business consultant, designated country manager for TOEFL.

Members of AAERI will also register for the ETS TOEFL Market Ambassador Program to get training with certification for counsellors and trainers on the test for free. They will also be able to access free test preparation collateral, executive passes to attend TOEFL Essentials launch event, agent network incentives for registrations and other exclusive benefits they can share with students including a $10 discount on the TOEFL iBT.

Iyer explained that given the fact that 100% of Australian universities accept the TOEFL, AAERI was looking forward to collaborating and guiding students through their transition to a university in Australia.

The main concerns about the IDP acquisition was whether it would use IELTS data for its student recruitment activities. Students registering for IELTS through IDP will further be approached by study abroad aspirants for admission, said Sushil Sukhwani, owner and founding director of Edwise.

In response, IDP has said that there were strict guidelines against using IELTS data for student placement.

The AAERI president still wants to make sure that university brochures and websites list all acceptable tests and let students consider all options before deciding which test to take. He also said that he has been working with Australias department of Home Affairs to learn more about their English language test requirements.

Currently, the department accepts five English language tests for migration purposes, Lochan Singh said.

AAERI also wrote to IDP about their concerns, to which IDP replied with some clarifications.

While IDP will be the only distributor of IELTS in India, British COuncil will continue to be the co-owner of the test.
