Biden-Harris Administration's New Approach to Welcome International Students, Scholars

Put forth in a joint statement by the US departments of state and education, the approach highlighted by the Biden-Harris administration has been acknowledged by hundreds of Indian students planning on studying in the US this Fall.

On the opening day of the 2021 EducationUSA Forum, the Biden-Harris administration highlighted a coordinated approach adopted by the US government to welcome more international students and scholars to the country.

Put forth in a joint statement by the US departments of state and education, the approach has been acknowledged by hundreds of Indian students planning on studying in the US this Fall.

The statement further said the exchange of international students, scholars, researchers and educators in addition to broader international education efforts between the US and other countries helped in strengthening relationships between current and future leaders.

The EducationUSA Forum, a platform to engage students from around the world, this year was addressed by the US secretary of education Miguel Cardona and US secretary of state Antony Blinken.

The principles outlined in the statement recognised the importance of international education and the role of the US government in facilitating the same. It further recognised its purview of international affairs, national security and economic and border policy.

The two federal agencies have committed to focusing on international education through the following initiatives:

  • Taking part in the coordinated national approach to international education, which includes study in the US by international students and scholars and study abroad for American students, internationalisation of US campuses and classrooms and international research collaborations.

  • Emphasising on international education as a way to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Welcoming international students, scholars, educators, and researchers to the US in a safe and secure manner while encouraging diversity of disciplines, HEIs, participants and types of authorised schools.

  • Encouraging students, scholars, researchers and educators in the US who diversify the countrys population to pursue higher education abroad, internationships, eresearch and other international experiences.

  • Promoting further access to international education through the use of technology where in-person learning is difficult, connecting US students, scholars, researchers and educators and other peers abroad.

  • Implementing procedures, policies to authorize practical experiences while promoting integrity of the programme and protection of national security.

  • Enabling increased cooperation between the private sector and federal government and educational institutions to maintain integrity of federally-funded intellectual property and research endeavours.

In addition, the statement talks about the contribution made by international education towards the US economy, job creation and innovation. In 2020, international students contributed over $39 billion to the US economy, making the countrys education the 6th largest services export supporting around 415,000 American jobs.
