Canada Announces New Plan to Help International Students Become Permanent Residents

Minister Sean Fraser unveils another plan to aims to help international students and foreign workers to transition from temporary residence to permanent. The proposal aims to assist the country in its economic recovery and immigration plans for 2023-24.

Canada Announces New Plan to Help International Students Become Permanent Residents

Over the past year, Canada has been working towards increasing the number of ways foreign workers and international students can receive PR. In the latest announcement, Minister Sean Fraser has announced “a plan to increase the number of international students and foreign workers with extensive work experience for permanent residency in fields where there is a persistent labour shortage”.

The announcement comes after a Private Member’s Motion M-44 by Randeep Sarai, a  Liberal MP, was approved by the House of Commons in May of this year. Fraser commented that the Canadian government aims to create “more avenues to permanent residency”, citing the importance of international students and foreign workers to the country’s economy.

Fraser stated that foreign workers facilitate corporate, creativity and productivity through their wide range of skill sets and educational qualifications, thus contributing to Canada’s economic recovery and growth. Meanwhile, international students help expand the country’s workforce and facility more productivity, while counteracting the ageing population.

Therefore, the minister aims to help international students and foreign workers to transition from temporary residence to permanent. The minister intends to do so by either extending or changing the available pathways for foreign nationals and international students wishing to stay in Canada and work. He further highlighted that there are several pathways presently available that help these foreign workers and international students transition from temporary to permanent residency.

In his statements, he called for a “five-pillar approach” to address this issue. Reports state that the Immigration Plan 2022-24 will ensure that the country has a greater and more permanent supply of labour. Additionally, the proposal will allow the country to help transition temporary residents to become permanent and thus, help solve the labour market shortages and economic recovery plans of the country.
