Under its 'IEC' initiative or programme, Canada is planning to allow more international students to work and travel in the country. The IEC permits Canadian and international students to work and travel in each other's countries.

Canada Launches IEC to Attract International Youth to Travel and Work for 2 Years

Canada has developed the International Experience Canada (IEC) programme, which allows children to travel and work in Canada for up to two years. The Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, announced the 2023 International Experience Canada (IEC) Programme on Thursday, December 1, 2022, with a 20% increase in the number of applicants eligible to apply. Applicants will be eligible to apply beginning January 9 of the following year.

The International Exchange Programme (IEC) permits Canadian and international students to work and travel in each other's nations. This increase means that approximately 90,000 individuals will be allowed to work and travel in Canada, assisting employers in filling labour needs, particularly seasonal work opportunities in Canada's tourism industry.

According to Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, the government is assisting more international students to work and travel in Canada, thereby assisting employers, most of whom are in the tourism industry, in finding the personnel they require. By providing students with the chance for international travel and job experience, the country strengthens the economy and assists their businesses in succeeding.

International students contribute significantly to the country, according to Marci Ien, Minister for Women, Gender Equality, and Youth. International students provide value to communities across Canada, from strengthening interpersonal relationships to assisting businesses in their growth. The announcement of the IEC programme will help sectors such as tourism find the personnel they need to address labour gaps, while also giving youth the opportunity to learn about Canadian cultures, languages, and societies.

There are 3 categories of participation under the IEC programme:

  • Participants on a Working Holiday acquire an open work visa that permits them to work anywhere in the host nation to fund their travels.

  • International Co-op (Internship) participants are provided with an employer-specific work visa, allowing them to get tailored experience in their field of study.

  • Participants in the Young Professionals programme are given an employer-specific work permit to get specialised, professional work experience in their field of study or career path.
