China Relaxes Visa Restrictions for Indian Students

After being stranded in the country for more than two years, Indian students can now return to China. The Chinese embassy has declared that they will issue X1 visas for new and old students.

China Relaxes Visa Restrictions for Indian Students

China has finally announced its plans to issue visas to Indian students who are grounded and unable to return to the country for their higher studies due to strict Covid-19 restrictions. It also plans to provide various travel permits which also include business visas.

Ji Rong from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China tweeted congratulating the Indian students and appreciated their patience. She also welcomed them to return to China. 

Her tweet was accompanied by a detailed announcement by the Chinese embassy situated in New Delhi where the opening of visas for students, businessmen and families of those working in China was announced.

According to the announcement, China will issue X1 visas to new students who want to pursue an academic course as well as old students who want to return to China for their higher education.

The new students have to submit an original admission letter issued by the Chinese universities whereas old students have to submit a ‘Certificate for Returning to Campus’ issued by the university where they are enrolled.

Due to Beijing’s Covid-19 restrictions, more than 23,000 students, most of them being medicos, are stranded in India. India submitted an extensive name list of students who wanted to return to the country immediately as per instructions from China.

Few students from Pakistan, Russia and Sri Lanka and other countries have reached China on chartered flights in recent weeks.

More than 1,000 old students have expressed their interest to return to China to rejoin their studies. Now it is important to note if the universities which are supposed to process the requests, issue certificates to students.

There are no direct flights between India and China and therefore talks are going on between officials of both countries to resume the operation of flights.
