Germany 'Becomes 4th Nation with Largest Number of International Degree Students'

DAAD 2019 reports reveals that Germany has overtaken France to become the fourth nation with maximum enrollment of international students. 10.5% of the total students in Germany are international students.

DAAD or German Academic Exchange Service and the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies have released the data for the international students enrolled for higher education in Germanyin 2019. According to reports, around 320,000 international students were enrolled in various German universities in 2019, which covers up to 10.5% of total students in the country. With this, Germany has become the fourth-largest country to enrol international students.It has overtaken France in the ranking having the most international students enrollment. The United States remains no. 1 in the world with maximum international students seeking a degree.

The reports also claim that international students from MENA countries (Middle East and North Africa) grew by 68% in the past three years prior to 2019. 30% of the international student body are from Asia Pacific, 17.7% from the Middle East and 18.4% students belong to Western Europe countries. Around 20% of the total international students are from India and China.

Half of the international students population study at Nordrhein-Westfalen, Bayern and Baden-Wurttemberg. Over the past five years, there has been a 72% increase in the number of students showing interest in the masters degree programme, a 50% increase in the bachelors programme and 12% in PhD programmes.

While the pandemic is likely to leave an impact on international students trends, Germany is still optimistic in attracting a good number of international students in the future academic session. DAAD asserts that the international students attraction towards Germany for higher education is still high. Joybrato Mukherjee, the DAAD president says that Germany has managed to improve its reputation among international students due to good pandemic management during spring and summer. He further added that the report reveals good signs to convince more talented young students to take advantage of the education system of Germany and connect with them.

Michael Andreas Flacke, the spokesperson of DAAD in an address to the press said that international students are allowed and welcome to enter Germany even if they have chosen online courses in the current situation. He added that there are definitely some challenges like the visa process and travel but most consulates seem to be open and working in the country.
