Global Livability Index 2022: 3 Canadian Cities Make it to Top 10

The Global Livability Index 2022 conducted by the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) has witnessed the presence of three Canadian cities out of the top ten as the world’s most livable cities. Calgary in Alberta province has occupied the third position whereas Vancouver and Toronto have made it to the fifth and eighth spots respectively.

Vienna took first place while Copenhagen made it to second position. Calgary has joined Zurich in the third rank where it ranked above the latter in education and infrastructure. On the other hand, Zurich has outranked Calgary in culture and environment.

The positions increased from 2021 when the Covid-19 pandemic had forced the cities’ rankings to slip. Toronto had occupied the 20th position back then.

On the flip side, Damascus, Tripoli and Lagos have come last because of their unsafe way of life and prevalence of terrorism.

The conducting body of the survey, EIU analyses and monitors the impact of global development on population and cities. Each year, reports are published on the livability of cities worldwide based on criteria such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, stability, culture and environment. The 2022 survey was based on 172 cities, an increase from 139 cities in 2021.

Due to improvement in living standards, the overall scores of the cities showed an increase this year. With more and more people being vaccinated, the culture and environment scores improved for cities. The healthcare scores increased with the pressure on the medical system decreasing. However,  the average stability score has decreased.

Canada is about to provide 4,50,000 new permanent residencies by the end of 2024 for which the country has more than 100 immigration pathways.
