India in Discussion with Top US Universities to Establish Joint Campuses

Both theUS and India are looking at ways to bring together institutions and build joint campuses, thus strengthening the India-US relationship in the field of education.

Being the second-highest source country of international students in the US, these joint campuses would help build the next generation for the knowledge economy in India. Further, this area of bilateral ties provided by the growing people-to-people relationship is the counterbalance against the strategic and economic ties.

As per Open Doors Report 2018-19, around 2 lakh students from India are enrolled in different bachelors, masters, non-degree, and optional practical training courses in the United States, particularly in the areas of STEM.

Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Indian ambassador to the US, while speaking to the TOI, said that they have been continuously working towards bringing together educators and experts from both India and the US. The New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 further helps the cause.

He further mentioned that he has been connecting with US state governors and university presidents who are excited about the India-US collaboration. The interaction between youth on both sides is crucial, given that it solidifies the future of US-India bonds along with the future of both these countries on the whole.

The universities being targetted by Indian officials include the University of California, Los Angeles; Georgia Tech; Howard University; the University of California, San Diego; among others.

Mr Sandhu has himself had interactions with 10 India-origin university presidents in hybrid mode, in presence of representatives from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and secretary, department of science and technology, to speak about ways to expand collaboration in education areas by establishing joint campuses of centres of excellence in Indian institutions.
