In spite of the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war, more than 3,000 MBBS students are staying in Ukraine to complete their degrees as they have to complete 54 weeks of practical training as directed by the NMC. They will not return to India without concrete plans.

Indian Students Forced to Stay in Ukraine for Practical Training

Though the Indian embassy in Ukraine released an advisory for Indians to leave Ukraine as soon as possible, around 3,000 medical students are currently staying back to complete their medical education.

Despite incessant bombings, they are forced to stay in Ukraine to complete their degrees. Students who took online training for three to four months were forced to do two years of internship. So, the medicos are unwilling to take further risks.

These students are sceptical to leave the country as they have to complete the mandatory 54 months of practical training as directed by the National Medical Commission. According to the NMC directive, the medical degree will not be considered valid if students do not attend physical classes in their respective medical colleges.

Students are heavy-hearted over the fact that NMC is only issuing guidelines without providing concrete solutions to the problems. Medical studies without practical training will not be recognised and therefore students are unable to return to India without any concrete backup plans.

MBBS students also complained that instead of making relaxations for foreign medical graduates, NMC is tightening the rules. Therefore, they will return to India only after completing their degrees.

Some students also said that the situation in Western Ukraine is normal. Apart from inflation, there are no other negative consequences of war. In case of serious conditions, students plan to migrate to the bordering countries with the help of the United Nations. Also, the universities situated in the Western part of Ukraine are shifting to the eastern quarters to avoid the ravages of the war.
