Indian Students to Become the Largest Foreign Group in Australia by the End of 2022

India will overtake China as the leading source of new international students arriving in Australia by the end of 2022 due to the continuous deteriorating relations between China and Australia.

Indian Students to Become the Largest Foreign Group in Australia by the End of 2022

The number of Indian students studying in Australia surpassed that of Chinese students in July 2022, making Indiansthe second-largest group of foreign students population.

Despite being slightly fewer than the 45,000 witnessed in 2019, the number of new students arriving from India between July 2022 to June 2023 (the Australian financial year)has increased in comparison to students from China.

As per Monica Kennedy, Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner, Austrade, the number of new Indian students is increasing swiftly, and it is anticipated that this would be the largest group of the student population from anywhere in the globe.

For major international higher education destinations including the United Kingdom, United States, and Australia, China is thetop source of international students, followed by India.However, there is a massive change in number dynamics this year (2022).

Australia hosted 5,706,226 overseas students between January 2021 and December 2021. According to data gathered by the Australian Government Department of Education, China contributed 1.70 lakh or 30% of all foreign students in Australiaand India contributed 97,000 or 17%,even after there was a decrease in the total number of students as compared to 2020 post-COVID-19 across all nationalities.

Based on the Open Door report sponsored by the US government, 3,17,299 Chinese students made up 34.6% of all international students in the country during the academic year 20202021, with 1.67 lakh Indian students taking second place with 18.3% of the total.

About 1,43,820 or32% of all international students in the UK were from China in 2021. According to the website Study in the UK, India was the second non-EU nation to send the most students to the UK with 84,555or roughly 9.2% of all international students in the country.

However, the enthusiasm of Chinese students is waning not only in Australia but also in the US. According to new research published in September 2022 by the Centre for China and Globalisation, a renowned non-governmental think tank in China with headquarters in Beijing, fewer Chinese students are now studying in the US and Australia due to the deteriorating China-US ties.

Additionally, due to friendlier study-abroad environments and visa regulations in nations across Europe and Asia, more Chinese students may decide to study there due to trade and geopolitical tensions between China and Australia.

The number of Chinese students studying in the US decreased for the first time in the last 10 years in the academic year 20202021, down 14.6% from 20192020, in accordance with the data. For two years, there was a decline in the number of Chinese students studying in Australia, with drops of 11.9% in 2021 and 9.9% in 2020.

India has also surpassed China as the most colossal nationality receiving the most number ofsponsored UK Study Visas. In the year ending June 2022, approximately 1,18,000 Indian students obtained study visas, which was a 215% increase over 2019. In the same time frame, 1.15 lakh sponsored study visas for Chinese students were given, which represents a 4% decrease from 2019.
