Indians Comprised 20% of International Students in US in 2020-21: 2021 Open Doors Report

The US embassy in Delhi tweeted that the US hosted a total of 17,582 Indian students in the 2020-21 academic year, according to the 2021 Open Doors Report. With over 914,000 international students, the US remains the top study destination.

Students from India comprised nearly 20% (a fifth) of the total number of international students in the United States in the 2020-21 academic year, according to the 2021 Open Doors Report.

The US embassy in Delhi, on November 15, tweeted that the US hosted a total of 17,582 Indian students in the 2020-21 academic year.

The report highlighted that the US continues to be the top destination for international students, with over 914,000 international students from more than 200 countries studying in the US.

The minister counsellor for consular affairs at the embassy, Don Heflin, said that in spite of the global pandemic, Indian students were able to apply for US student visas ad fly to the US. This year, India has issued over 62,000 students visas for this Summer alone, more than ever before.

This further affirms that international students value a US education and are committed to studying in the US.

These figures show that Indian students continue to choose the US for higher education. Heflin added that the embassy is looking forward to granting even more visas in the year ahead, to help Indian students pursue higher studies in the US.

Anthony Miranda, Counselor for cultural and educational affairs, expressed that the US values Indian students as they build life-long relationships with American students and grow international partnerships to collectively address current and future challenges at the international level.

As per the report, the US is the gold standard for higher education, offering top-class practical application and experiential learning that provides graduates with an edge in the international market.

Last year, the government of the US and US universities put in place measures to safely welcome international students online, in person or in a hybrid manner, allowing them to continue their studies amid the pandemic.
