Improving International Students' Language Skills Important for Canada's Economy: Fraser

In 2021, about 300,000 international students came to Canada, despite the travel challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Sean Fraser, the countrys immigration, refugees and citizenship minister, said that many of the international students who came to Canada in 2021 wanted to stay and build their lives in the country.

The influx of international students and immigrants is a key component of addressing the country's ageing population. Fraser noted that Nova Scotia, his own province's economy benefited from the influx of immigrants. He also cited the closure of a hospital and a school due to the shrinking local communities.

Despite the challenges,Fraser praised the province's newcomers for helping to make Nova Scotia a more prosperous region. He said that the training programs being offered, through which the government aims to help young individuals will improve their English skills and address the country's demographic issues.

Samuel Vetrak of a market research firm based in Vienna said that Canada's recruitment rate for international students is higher than that of other countries. He noted that the international education industry is facing various challenges such as the war in Ukraine and the cost of living in various countries.

The number of English-language students in Canada dropped by about 50% during the pandemic. Other countries, such as the UK, also experienced a decline in their English-language student numbers. The number of study permits issued by Canadian universities has also declined in Korea and China. Meanwhile, Colombia and Mexico are experiencing strong growth.

When international students arrive in Canada, they face various issues, such as the high cost of living and a shortage of homestays.

Some agents have reported that their clients had to change their destination due to the lack of housing. Despite the effects of the pandemic, Vetrak noted that the number of international students in Canada will grow by 8% in the next couple of years.
