Latvian Borders to Reopen for Foreign Full-time and Exchange Students

A spokesperson for the Latvian Ministry of Education and Science said that a written confirmation from the educational institution is mandatory for international students to enter Latvia, which should state that the inclusion of the person in the students’ list is necessary in order to complete a study programme.

Latvian Borders to Reopen for Foreign Full-time and Exchange Students

International full-time and exchange students will now be allowed to enter Latvia, the government of the country has announced. However, a number of travel restrictions will still be in place.

Overseas students must have written confirmation from their educational institution in order to be able to travel to Latvia. They must also provide a negative Covid-19 test taken 72 hours before travelling and self-isolate in case they are from a country with a high number of positive Covid-19 cases.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Education and Science ofLatvia said that a written confirmation from the educational institution is mandatory for international students to enter Latvia. The same should state that the inclusion of the person in the students list is necessary in order to complete a study programme.

The spokesperson also added that proof of a negative Covid-19 test may include a medical certificate, test result, antibody certificate and any other medical document stating that the said individual is not infectious. The same must be presented to the airline, failing which they will be denied boarding.

A statement issued by Study in Latvia stated that the decision has been made to provide international students with equal opportunities for quality education.

Studies in Latvia are conducted remotely. However, a number of international students have not been able to access high education standards while studying from their home country due to limited internet capacity and challenges caused by different time zones, Study in Latvia added.

Latvian universities will also assist international students who are required to self-isolate. The Latvian government informed that institutions must maintain communication with international students about how they will learn remotely, their requirements and new arrival and travel conditions.
