Canada is the second most popular country where Indian students flock. Presently, 1.83 lakhs Indian students are pursuing various levels of study in the country.
The USA takes the first position in being the most popular destination to study abroad with around 4.65 lakh Indian students according to the data presented by the Ministry of External Affairs.
The UAE occupies the third position with 1.64 lakh Indian students studying in various educational institutions.
The growth of students from India shows a similar trajectory in both the USA and Canada. In the first half of 2022, 64,667 Indians went to study in the USA with Canada closely following its heels with 60,258 students.
In 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, 1,32,620 Indian students went to study in Canadian institutions. In 2020, the numbers saw a sharp decline to 43,624. In 2021, it again saw an increasing trend with 1,02,688 students studying there.
Statistics from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) stated that the percentage of Indians choosing Canada to study increased by 220% between 2016 and 2021. Students are mostly choosing to study business courses with 10,000 students studying in 2016 to 50,000 studying in 2021. The number of students is expected to rise in the second half of the year.
On a side note, New Delhi has issued an advisory to students in Canada asking them to be vigilant against the increase in “hate crimes” and violence. The advisory was appreciated by students and some of them claim that they feel safe in the country.
