New Zealand government has decided to allow a small number of international students enrolled in Ph.D and postgraduate degree programmes to enter the country. Students are expected to return in November.

New Zealand government has released an official statement to allow 250 international students into the country. Students who have a valid study visa and were restricted to travel due to the COVID-19 situation can now return to New Zealand

Students are expected to arrive in the country in November, however, the majority of students will arrive in the country next year. Any student travelling to New Zealand will have to follow quarantine guidelines as defined by the government and so their entry timing will depend on the space available in the isolation and quarantine areas allotted by the government. They will have to remain in 14 days quarantine and also take a series of test COVID-19 tests on arrival in the country.

Chris Hipkins, the education minister of New Zealand said that opening up the borders will help them bring back students who are enrolled in master’s and PhD degree programmes so that they can complete their work. Priority will be given to those students to return to the country who need to be engaged in practical components of their research and study in the field of study like medicine, veterinary, engineering, laboratory sciences or agricultural research.

He further said that the return of international students will play a vital role in the recovery and rebuilding of the country as they continue to strive against the pandemic. Also, it will boost the international education sector of the country as international PhD and postgraduate students make a significant contribution to the research and innovation systems of the country and provide global reputations and competitiveness of the New Zealand institutions.
