With socio and geo-political issues rising and causing disruptions across the globe, an industry that has received the devastating end of the stick is foreign medical education. Several students from India who travelled abroad to different countries for medical studies abroad, especially in countries like China, Ukraine, etc, have faced immense challenges.
However, sources state that Russian medical universities have been prepping to accommodate many Indian students across different medical courses. The TOI reported that the Russian medical universities, expecting a huge demand, are planning to increase the Indian student intake by 50%, spiking up from 5,000 to 7,500 for the 2022-23 academic year.
In its report, the TOI stated that 22,000 students out of the 3.16 lakh international students studying in Russia are Indian, with most of them pursuing medical education. It further stated that a Russian Education Fair would be conducted at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture in Chennai, on 23 and 24 July 2022.

Lagutin Sergey Alekseevich, Consul, Consulate General at the Russian Federation in Chennai stated that 1,300 students from Tamil Nadu had selected Russia for their medical education in 2019. Alekseevich further added that the country is expecting to see more Indian students this year.
Alekseevich also stated that pursuing higher education in Russia will comparatively be cheaper since the Russian government highly subsidises it. Reportedly, studying medicine in English medium may cost anywhere between INR 3-5 lakh per annum, variable between universities.
Highlighting the current situation, the TOI reported that several university representatives from different Russian higher education institutions have assured a peaceful environment within the country’s borders. Timur Rstemovich Akhmetove, vice dean for foreign students' education at Kazan State Medical University stated that while the political situation may be tense, nothing else has changed except slight inflation of the prices.

Nevertheless, TOI also highlighted that students have been facing issues with regard to money transfers as Indian cards currently do not work in Russia. However, Ravi Chandran, managing director at Study Abroad Educational Consultants, stated that a Sber bank branch had been opened exclusively to solve this issue.
