The Israel Academy of Humanities and Sciences and the Council for Higher Education in Israel have announced an excellent opportunity for international postdoctoral candidates, who wish to pursue further research in their respective fields, through an excellence fellowship programme.

In a bid to promote and attract more postdoctoral researchers from countries abroad, the Council for Higher Education in Israel and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities have announced an excellence fellowship programme. The programme will bring about opportunities for postdoctoral fellows to participate in innovative research projects under one of the Universities in Israel.

About Israel’s Excellence Fellowship Programme for International Postdoctoral Researchers

Under the new fellowship, sources state that the fellows will take in different activities like workshops, seminaries, social events and day trips. Currently, there will be 20 fellowships in total that will be awarded to aspiring postdoctoral students. As per the announcement, 15 of these fellowships have been allocated for research in Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, i.e. STEM courses. The remaining 5 fellowships will be granted to researchers in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences. Sources state that the fellowships will amount to 160,000 NIS (nearly Rs. 34.67 lakh) for a period of two years.

Eligibility for Israel’s Excellence Fellowship Programme for International Postdoctoral Researchers

All candidates who are interested in availing the Fellowship will be required to meet the eligibility for Israel’s Excellence Fellowship Programme for International Postdoctoral Researchers, which have been defined below.

  • All applicants must be classified as international students with a PhD qualification, awarded by a recognised higher education institution in any country outside of Israel.

  • Candidates must have earned the PhD for a maximum of 4 years before the time of application. In other words, all candidates who have held a PhD degree for over 4 years, are not eligible for the fellowship.

  • Candidates must possess a PhD prior to the commencement of the fellowship. In other words, if you have recently completed your PhD and are awaiting your degree, then you must ensure that you will receive the degree prior to the commencement of the fellowship.

Apart from these eligibility criteria, the candidate must be accepted to a postdoctoral position under the guidance of a faculty member at one of these Universities in Israel - Bar-Ilan University, Open University of Israel, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Ariel University, Ben-Gurion University, Weizmann Institute of Science, Tel Aviv University, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and the University of Haifa.

Israel’s Excellence Fellowship Programme for International Postdoctoral Researchers: How to Apply

International Postdoctoral Researchers interested in applying for the Excellence Fellowship Programme offered in Israel must complete the following steps.

  • All application along with the relevant documents should be submitted by the Universities on or before 1st February to the Israel Academy of Humanities and Sciences.

  • All candidates who wish to apply must directly apply to the host university, who in turn will conduct an internal evaluation of the application forms.

  • The universities will then shortlist and send the shortlisted applications to the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

  • Applications that are received by the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities if the same have been sent out by the participating universities.

Selection Process: Israel’s Excellence Fellowship Programme for International Postdoctoral Researchers

Once the applications have been received, the Israel Academy of Humanities and Sciences, the Israel Young Academy along with the leading scientists and scholars in the Israeli Academia will shortlist and select eligible applicants based on their academic and research excellence. Sources state that those who win the award will be notified for the same by May 2021.
