Telangana Govt to Fund Education of 700 Medical Students Who Returned From Ukraine

Amid the debate on why Indian students go abroad to study medicine, the government of Telangana has decided to fund the education cost of 700 students who had gone to Ukraine to study MBBS. In a speech in the Legislative assembly on March 15, 2022, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao said that a total of 740 students from the state who were studyingin Ukraine have returned to India.

The Central government had evacuated over 18,000 Indians from Ukraine. Many of them were students who went to study medicine and were left stranded in the war-torn country without food, water, and shelter.

Astudent named Naveen Shekharappa Gyanagowdar from Karnataka died in Ukraine in Russian shelling. His death sparked a debate on whether Indian students should study MBBS abroad. Others argued that only those who have failed in the medical entrance exams should study abroad.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi had implied that students study abroad after failing in the competitive exams conducted in India. The debate sparked a sharp response from the father of the student who died in Ukraine, who had pointed out the high cost of studying in India.

The father argued that his son went to Ukraine to study medicine as he could not afford to study in India. The father of the student argued that since intelligent students go to Ukraine to study medicine, theyhave to pay a huge sum for obtaining a seat under a quota.

Most students go to Ukraine to study for medical, dental, and nursing degrees. The country has lower fees and easier admission procedures. The cumulative fee for medicine in countries such as Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan is around INR35 lakh.

In India, the fee for MBBS courses is generally between INR20,000 and INR7.5 lakh whereas private colleges can charge up to INR1 crore. Students in Ukraine face a difficult time getting a loan due to the extensive background checks and fees involved. If the degree gets delayed, the bank may stop paying the additional amount.

Most of the tuition fees for medical studies in Ukraine are financed by the bank. After the completion of their course, students would be able to return their loans. Usually, students do not consider waiving their education loans during times of war or a global pandemic. The principal amount of the loan remains the same as it was before. Even if the bank gives an extension, the students would still have to return the loan.
