Telangana to Raise Scholarship Amount Under Overseas Education Scheme

Telangana SC Development Minister Koppula Eshwar said the scholarship amount under the Overseas Education Scheme may be increased and the same will be taken up with Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao. He also said that the government is looking to increase the income limit of parents of the applicants seeking a scholarship from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh

Telangana to Raise Scholarship Amount Under Overseas Education Scheme

Telangana SC Development Minister Koppula Eshwar announced that the state government will consider the requests to raise the scholarship amount under the Overseas Education Scheme.

The Minister also said that the government is looking to increase the income limit of parents of the applicants seeking a scholarship from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh and add more countries to the list in order to let more students study under the scheme.

He added that hese issues will be taken up with Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao very soon and that they will try to arrive at a positive decision after looking at all the aspects of the same. He futher clarified that the funds took longer to be released because of the Covid-19 pandemic and the impact it had on the State revenues.

Eshwar also replied to a number of questions raised during Question Hour in the Assembly. During that period, he said that 3,676 students from Telangana had benefitted from the scheme since its launch in 2014. The State had spent a total of Rs 589.69 crore that managed to help students from SC, ST, BC and other minority communities.

Of the total, the government of Telangana has spent Rs 181 crore on 1,171 BC students, RS 277,99 crore on 1,684 minority students, Rs 100.80 crore on 581 SC students and Ts 29.89 crore on 24 ST students.

Over the year, the scheme has offered financial assistance to a lot of students from weaker sections who wanted to pursue higher studies abroad. Although the scheme was created in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, the Telangana government announced the same for students in its state and announced singificant changes such as an increase of the scholarship amount from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh. In addition, the annual income limit of an applicants parents has been increased from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.

Under the scheme, students can opt to study in countries including the UK, US, Australia, Germany, Canada, France, South Korea, Singapore, Japan and New Zealand. According to the data, 54% of the applicants are studying in the US, 21% in Australia, 11.5% in the UK and the remaining 27% in rest of the countries.

The Minister went on to answer another question and said that the state government had spent Rs 145.26 crore for subsidies against bank schemes through the State Christian Finance Corporation and Telangana State Minorities Finance Corporation. Arounf 17,425 students benefitted from these schemes including the driver empowerment scheme and economic support scheme.
