UAE University Launches Career Readiness Program for International Students

The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) has announced the launch of The Edge, a new career readiness program that aims to create a truly global workforce. The 12-month program will be free for all new first-year students and will help boost student employability and equip them with the required skills that will ensure a successful professional journey.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has set an international record with the second-highest immunisation numbers and continues to develop new plans to respond to the global pandemic. The country proceeds with creating new approaches to attract international talent, professional excellence and expert from across the globe.

Its ongoing vaccination drives include free Covid-19 vaccination to students coming to the country after receiving their student residence visa.

In January 2021, the UAE also agreed to an amendment to its residency laws letting international students studying at one of UAEs universities bring their family members to the UAE.

The World Bank said that the Covid-19 pandemic and shutdown measures have thrown the global economy into disorder and has further led to the world recession since World War II.

Recent graduates now have to face an increasingly competitive professional world where employers are looking for candidates who are industry-ready and have skills that go beyond the traditional classroom.

Chief Operating Officer of UOWD Andy Phillips said that it is the first university if the Middle East to launch a career readiness program that prepares graduates for the modern corporate world. This will be done through CV preparation, internship placement, interview techniques among other things. In addition, it will also focus on helping students explore and find their career path, network with great mentors and understand behavioural science. The Edge requires only 30 hours from students that will not obstruct their university timetables.

The program has been designed to fit into the curriculum of each degree at the university. The same will be delivered through online sessions, coaching groups, webinars and on-campus workshops.

It will be headed by world experts including serial entrepreneur Job Duschinsky; behavioural expert and founder of Agency People John Gage; journalist at BBC Worlds Middle East Business Report Nima Abu Wardeh; voice, speech and communications coach Ausar Stewart; and the managing partners of Insight Media James Mullan and Oliver Blofeld.

John Gage expressed his excitement to be a part of The Edge. He added that it is an excellent program that will pave the way for students to fulfil their potential and get insights into their personal and professional lives that people usually realise when they turn at least 50.

Another interesting thing about the program is that it will use scientifically recognised tests like the Thomas International Personal Profile Analysis. It helps evaluate a students choice of degree by evaluating their personality.

The pilot phase of the program suggests that students have found their reports very insightful and discussion with coaches quite helpful.

The coaches involved in The Edge will provide expert knowledge in the fields of entrepreneurship, communication coaching, human behaviour and assess their aptitude through psychometric testing and personality assessment.

The program also focuses on areas such as inclusion, bias, equality and diversity which will push students to make an impact and be agents of change.
