The UK’s University of Birmingham (UoB) and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) have announced joint masters programmes for Indian students with the intention of furthering institutional partnerships. A joint research fund will be established between the two universities to support potential research collaborations in areas such as data science, energy, and biomedical engineering.

University of Birmingham UK & IIT Madras Announce Joint Masters Programmes for Indian Students

A joint master's programme will be offered by the University of Birmingham and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) that will allow Indian students to study in both Birmingham (United Kingdom) and Chennai before earning a single degree from both institutions.

The jointly developed programmes will be presented on the campuses of both universities, and the mutual recognition of the academic credits given by each university will result in the awarding of a single degree certificate.

This is the first time any IIT and a UK Russell Group university have collaborated on an educational endeavour at the Master's level. This will be done by providing academic flexibility to students that would enable them to learn and work in the current engineering and technology areas defining the future of the global economy.

A joint Statement of Intent to explore study areas like data science, energy systems, and biomedical engineering was signed by Professor V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, and Professor Adam Tickell, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Birmingham.

The first joint master's programme is set to be launched in 2023, followed by the development of additional academic programmes in the subsequent years. The partnership agreement was negotiated by Professor Adam Tickell during a visit to Chennai.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that the two institutions signed in February 2022 stating their commitment to advance their relationship serves as the foundation for the current arrangement.

Further, professor Adam Tickell stated that the UoB is committed to developing relevant education and research relationships in India. These ground-breaking joint master's programmes offered by IITM and UoB will give students the chance to pursue a top-tier education at two of the world's top universities and acknowledge their academic accomplishments by both.

This is a magnificent beginning for what the authorities hope will be a long and beneficial partnership with the University of Birmingham, said Professor Raghunathan Rengaswamy, Dean (Global Engagement), IIT Madras, striking multiple high notes.
