The latest report published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) pointed out that US universities are ranking at the top forover half of the academic disciplines than universities in other countries.
The QS, in its World University Rankings by Subject, analysedmore than 15,000 subjects at 1,543 top universities and found that 239 programs in the US are in the top 10. It has left the UK far behind which has 131 subjects in the top 10. Despite the success, the rankings of US universities at the top have declined from 71% to 53% in the last five years.
In 2022 list Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology were in the first position, each with a first-class position in 12 academic categories. MIT ranked top in engineering disciplines like mechanical, civil and structural, and electrical, mathematics, chemistry, physics, astronomy and materials science. Harvard topped in accounting and business, economics, history, law, medicine, politics, psychology and sociology. Environmental Sciences at Stanford, philosophy at New York University, engineering mining at Colorado School of Mines and specific subjects at the University of Pennsylvania have shown brilliant results. The US performed exceptionally well in research around climate change, medicine and Covid-19.

The UK had 15 overall rankings of first place, which included six from Oxford University. Switzerland came next with 4 spots, the Netherlands had two positions and Sweden, Singapore, Australia and Italy had one place respectively.

The higher institutions have faced several challenges in the last few years, be it in the form of stiff competition from their peer institutions, the conflicting political climate or the challenges of reducing public funding.
