I. Horbachevsky Ternopil State Medical University (TNMU) was founded in 1957 as Ternopil State Medical Institute. In 1992, the public university was named after I. Ya. Horbachevsky, a famous scientist. Seven years later, in 1999, the institute confirmed the highest (IVth) degree of accreditation. TNMU was ranked among the first medical universities in the branch rating of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in 2014 and 2016. The university, which was started as a pedagogical, medical, scientific, cultural and educational centre of the region, also grabbed the first spot in the overall rating of the universities of Ukraine in 2016 according to the International Educational Portal “4 International Colleges & Universities”. In addition, The QS ranking system ranked TNMU 15th nationally and 3368th globally in its 2021 edition.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

Located in the city of Ternopil in Ukraine, TNMU has a total of four campuses comprising 57 academic departments, six academic and research institutes, 34 training facilities, 18 medical facilities, four training centres, six certified research laboratories, four dormitories, a library and more. 46 specialities offered at the university have been certified and accredited for the training of specialists at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It contains the faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing, with the Institute of Postgraduate Education delivering several programs in a wide range of fields, amounting to a total of 305 academic courses. Since its inception, new learning technologies have been implemented including independent testing of students’ knowledge, remote control of students’ knowledge by the Moodle platform, practical skills matricula and OSCE.

Accomplishments & Alumni 

9.87% of TNMU teachers have been awarded a scientific degree, which is the highest among all the medical universities in Ukraine. It is also the only university in the country to have introduced the correspondence way of studying for bachelors and masters in nursing. With over 23,000 Ukrainian and 2,360 international alumni, TNMU prides itself on its long list of notable alumni. Some of them include former members of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine - V.I.Maltsev, V.V.Shafranskyi, S.V.Shevchuk and V.L.Veselskyi. Further, over 42,000 doctors and around 10,000 interns have improved their medical skills and qualification at the Institute of Postgraduate Education, to date. Since 2015, the university has been a member of the European Association of Universities and also joined the Grand Charter of Universities in 2016.

Student Diversity & Employment Opportunities

Since the establishment of TNMU, the number of domestic students has increased tenfold, along with the number of international students that has risen 8 times. Every year, it welcomes over 4,500 Ukrainian students and over 1,900 international students from around 59 countries. The university has long been focused on providing university students with internships and other employment opportunities for the development of their professional skills. Since 2011, the students of the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry have had the opportunity to practice in the Academic and Training Centres of Primary Health Care in Zarubyntsi, Kokoshyntsi, Hnylytsi, Hovyliv, Uvysla of Ternopil region.
