Overview

Durham University is the UK’s third oldest university after Oxford University and Cambridge University. It is a collegiate public research university and has 17 affiliated colleges apart from the home campus’s academics and other administrative functions. The establishment of the university dates back to 1381 when Durham College was initially set up. Since then, the university struggled to win the status of the university until the year 1832 when by virtue of the Act of Parliament it was granted the status of university. The same was honoured and confirmed by the Royal Charter on  July 4, 1832. Additionally, Durham University has affiliations with Russell Group, ACU, Coimbra Group, EUA, N8 Group, Matariki Network of Universities, University of the Arctic, Universities UK and Virgo Consortium.

Durham University provides undergraduate and postgraduate degrees through the 4 faculties of  Social Sciences and Health; Arts and Humanities; Science; and Business, which in turn operates 28 departments. The university has 17 affiliated colleges including Collingwood College, College of St. Hild and St. Bede, Grey College, Hatfield College, St. John’s College, St. Mary’s College, South College, University College, Ustinov College and Van Mildert College. Durham University is also home to research institutes of Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World, Durham Energy Institute, Institute for Hazard and Risk Research, Institute of Advanced Study, International Boundaries Research Unit and Institute for Computational Cosmology. The university is the alma mater of Justin Welby, Sir Milton Margai, Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, Nish Kumar, Edward Bradley, Will Carling, Naseer Hussain and Sophie Hosking among others.

Application Process

Durham University, like most UK universities, offers two ways of applying for admission. The university entertains applications through the:

  • UCAS Route

  • Common App Route

There are certain cautions which need to be followed by the students while applying for admission in Durham University:

  • If applying through UCAS for other universities, then students cannot apply for Durham University through Common App Route.

  • Each Durham affiliated college has been codified for preference, these codes can be by the students to state preferences in priority.

  • UCAS provides only 5 choices and hence it is important to be sure of further choices and path to not waste the chance of decision making.

  • Properly explore all the terms of the route that is being chosen for application.

Durham University Accommodations

Durham University provides international  students with both on-campus and off-campus accommodation support. The colleges affiliated with the university manage the accommodation facilities under their jurisdiction. The following can easily map the accommodation support of Durham university:

  • There are two types of on-campus accommodation, catered and self-catered. The students can choose any of the two through references.

  • The students can also choose to stay off-campus, and apply for support to university administration where they can connect with the landlords and registered estate managers.

  • All self-catered accommodation facilities are available at New Kepier Court. Their  rent is comparatively lower than the catered accommodation, yet not much difference is registered due to the increase in the number and quality of collateral facilities.

  • Students may or may not apply for accommodation support. However, this option is available only for students about to begin their undergraduate studies. They would have a standing offer of on-campus accommodation along with the offer letter and need not make a separate application.
