Founded in 1819, Colgate University is one of the oldest universities in the United States. It was initially founded as the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York and was renamed Hamilton Theological and Literary Institution and was popularly known as Hamilton College. Later in 1846, its name was changed to Madison College. Finally, it was named Colgate University in 1890. Colgate University is located in Hamilton, New York. It is a private liberal arts college that holds No. 17 ranking in the list of National Liberal Arts Colleges by U.S News Ranking.

The campus area of the university extends across an area of 600 acres which is located on a hillside at the northern edge of the Allegheny Plateau.
