WB CM Mamata Banerjee conferred D.Litt. by Japan's Okayama University

The WB Chief Minister, Ms. Mamata Banerjee, has been awarded an honorary D.Litt. from Japan’s Okayama University on November 12, 2025. The event was conducted in Kolkata, with the Japanese delegation visiting the state for the Bengal Global Business Summit.

The West Bengal CM, Mamata Banerjee, has received an honorary D.Litt. from Japan’s Okayama University on November 12, 2025. The degree was awarded to the CM at the Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium in Kolkata, in an event conducted in this honour. The public national university’s president, Nasu Yasutomo, led a Japanese delegation and felicitated the Bengal Chief Minister. The decision to honour her was taken on the grounds of her impressive work as a humanitarian leader and her dedication towards improving the overall living conditions of women and children in the state. Her contributions towards cultural and educational developments in West Bengal were also highly appreciated by the Japanese delegation. This marks the first time that Okayama University has presented an honorary D.Litt. to any Asian woman.

Mamata Banerjee has also received three previous honorary D.Litt. degrees from Calcutta University and St Xavier’s University in West Bengal, and the KIIT University in Bhubaneswar. During her acceptance speech, the CM appreciated the discipline, health awareness and work culture of the Japanese people, and expressed her gratitude for the honour. She also promised that she would visit the university next year to take a glimpse of the beautiful infrastructure. The Japanese delegation from the university was visiting Kolkata for the Bengal Global Business Summit when this event took place.

The West Bengal CM and the Japanese delegation have also discussed the possible strategies of educational and cultural exchanges, joint research, and investments between the Japanese and Bengal universities in the near future. The colonial ties between the two countries, especially West Bengal and Japan, have always been in the talks for many. A possible cultural exchange in the future between the two is likely to encourage students from all walks of life to get an exposure to the global education and career opportunities.
