Conditions for Law Degrees from Foreign Universities

As outlined on 26.08.2020, the BCI laid down certain criteria wherein law degrees offered by universities abroad enjoy recognition in India, provided they meet the following guidelines.

  • Students should have pursued a regular law course after graduation in the pattern of 10+2+3+3 or have completed a 5-year course in the pattern of 10+2+5.

    • In other words, candidates should either have completed a 3-year bachelor’s after their 12th or a 5-year bachelor’s course after 12th.

  • Courses offered by foreign universities abroad, as outlined below, will enjoy a BCI recognition:

    • 3-Year LLB course which should be taken only after completing a 3-year bachelor’s course such as a BA, BBA, BCom or a BSc.

    • 3-year LLB course which was followed immediately with a 1-year full-time LPC or BVC and a service contract with a Law Firm for a minimum span of 2 years. Candidates with these qualifications will be eligible to enrol as a solicitor or take pupilage for a year in the Chamber of a Qualified Barrister to be a Master.

    • A 4-year LLB course in conjuncture with a subject like Finance, Accounts, Management, or a Language which should be followed immediately by a 1-year LPC/BVC from a College of Inns of Courts, Solicitors Society or a Master’s degree in law.

In other words, BCI recognises only 3-year LLB courses offered by universities abroad and not any other kaw degrees such as diploma courses, 2-year law courses or other external courses.
