When will IIM release CAT 2026 official notification?

Will there be changes in the CAT 2026 exam pattern?

Based on the recent trends, the CAT 2026 exam pattern is unlikely to change. The last major structural change was made in 2024, when the total number of questions were increased to 68 from 66. The DILR section saw an increase from 20 to 22 questions, shifting the set distributions.

Is the CAT 2026 syllabus changing or losing topics?

As of now, there is no news of the CAT 2026 syllabus and core topics changing or losing any key subjects. IIM does not officially release a fixed syllabus but previous trends reveal that the core topics have remained the same over the years, although the topic-wise weightage have shifted.

Here’s a section-wise topic breakdown with question weightage:

Section

Question Count

Core Focus & Sub-Topic Breakdown

Strategic Structural Trends

Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC)

24

  • Reading Comprehension: 16 Questions (4 passages X 4 questions each) drawn from diverse genres.

  • Verbal Ability: 8 Questions (Paragraph Summaries, Odd-One-Out, and Paragraph Insertion).

Centered heavily around reading comprehension. Direct vocabulary and core grammar questions have effectively disappeared from the main pool.

Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR)

22

  • 5 Distinct Sets (containing 4 to 5 questions each).

  • Key Themes: Complex matrix arrangements, games & tournaments, and multi-set Venn diagrams.

Move away from standalone calculation tables or basic linear puzzles. The current trend leans heavily toward complex, hybrid logic-data sets.

Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

22

  • Core Pillars: Arithmetic (Percentages, TSD, Profit & Loss) and Algebra make up 65% to 70% of the section.

  • Secondary Pillars: Geometry and Modern Math.

Intentionally designed to level the playing field for non-engineering backgrounds by shifting structural focus toward commercial math over advanced concepts.

How many candidates are expected to register for CAT 2026?

CAT being one of the most competitive exams for an IIM seat sees a massive pool of candidates. Last year, 2.95 lakh students registered for CAT. This year, the number is expected to grow further due to the rising demands in corporates across Management Consulting, FMCG, and BFSI sectors. We predict over 3 lakh MBA aspirants will register for CAT 2026. This means, with the total number of applicants expanding rapidly, getting a 99+ percentile won’t be easy. You cannot rely on guesswork. You need to have an excellent preparation strategy that prioritizes accuracy over attempts.

For now, continue practicing with the standard 68-question in a 2-hour mock framework. Focus on core Arithmetic, DILR sets and Analytical Reading. Keep an eye out on the CAT 2026 official website to avoid missing the notification and registration window.
