Unit 3: Learning and Cognitive Development	What is learning and how do children learn? Review of different theories – behavioural, structural, and social concepts. What is cognition? Views of Jean Piaget on children’s thinking, construction of knowledge, schema, assimilation, accommodation, organization, and equilibration. Characteristics of adolescent thinking: what is a mental operation, the development of thinking from early childhood to adolescence and its stages, the sensory stage, the functional stage, the pre-operational stage, the concrete operational stage, and the formal operational stage. Educational importance of Piaget’s theories. Lev Vygotsky’s theory, Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), and the role of teachers in scaffolding. Child as a problem solver and a scientific investigator. Alternative conceptions of learning in children, understanding children’s errors as significant steps in the learning process. Motivation and learning.	9 marks
Unit 4: Children with Special Needs	Children with special needs – meaning, defect, damage, disability, similarity & differences, and working with differently-abled children. Knowledge and curriculum – need of curriculum, concept of curriculum, concept of syllabus, problems in learning, curriculum, criteria for the selection of curriculum. Right to Education Act-2009, role and responsibilities of teachers, child rights.	7 marks
