CMAT Tie-breaker Criteria 2026
If more than one candidate has obtained the same overall marks, a tiebreaker process is conducted to decide who ranks higher. The process compares specific sectional scores in a prioritized order. Here's how it works:
- Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation: The first step is to compare scores in this section. The candidate who has scored higher marks in this section is preferred.
- Logical Reasoning: If the Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation are the same, then check for Logical Reasoning. Here, the aspirant with the high score in this area shall rank higher.
- Language Comprehension: In case of a tie here again, in Logical Reasoning, the candidate with the best performance in Language Comprehension is preferred.
- General Awareness: In case the Language Comprehension scores are still tied, the marks obtained in the General Awareness section are considered.
- Innovation & Entrepreneurship: If the tie is still not broken, the scores in the Innovation & Entrepreneurship section are also taken into consideration.
- Negative Marks & Age: If all the sectional scores are still the same, the candidate with fewer negative marks is preferred. If negative marks are also the same, then the older candidate takes the higher rank.
- Alphabetical Order: As a last resort, if the tie remains, the names of the candidates are arranged alphabetically to determine the rank.

CMAT 2026 Selection Procedure
If you aim to gain entry through the CMAT examination, here's the general flow you will experience during the CMAT selection process :
CMAT Score-based Shortlisting
Each institute publishes its cut-off scores following the announcement of the CMAT results. You will be asked to move on to the following phases of the admissions process if your score satisfies their requirements.
Institute-Level Selection Process
You will need to go through further evaluation processes at the institutions you have applied to. The last selection process includes several rounds that test your skills and aptitude for their MBA or PGDM programs. These generally include:
- Group Discussion (GD): You are put in a panel of around 10 candidates, and a topic is assigned to you to discuss. It lasts for almost 10 minutes, and you will be judged by the way you can contribute during this time. They test the skills to start a conversation, negotiate, control the discussion, elicit contributions from others, and sum up efficiently. Topics could be politics, economics, sports, and social issues.
- Written Ability Test (WAT): Here, you would write an essay on a particular topic to show your communication skills, analytical thinking, grammar, and vocabulary. The test also checks how current affairs or general topics knowledgeable you are.
- Personal Interview (PI): Finally, you have to sit before a panel of faculty members or experts. They may ask about your academic achievements, work experience, hobbies, and interests. In brief, it will evaluate whether you fit in well and have the personality, attitude, and character for your institute.

FAQs
No, a common cut-off is not declared by institutes for MBA/PGDM admissions based on their performance in CMAT exams. Each institute declares cut-offs based on the number of applications received, the number of available seats, and overall CMAT performance. Hence the applicants should look out at individual cut-offs declared at B-schools where they aspire to join.
Yes, the National Testing Agency (NTA) publishes the CMAT scorecard individually after declaring the results of the CMAT. The scorecard carries important information like the name of the candidate, roll number, sectional scores in Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, General Awareness, and Innovation & Entrepreneurship, 1 overall score, and percentile. The scorecard is required for the subsequent admission process in participating institutes.
The date for the declaration of the CMAT 2026 merit list has not yet been declared. It is expected to arrive after the declaration of the results of CMAT 2026. For more updates and communications about the merit list arrival, visit the official portal of CMAT.
The merit list for the CMAT 2025 will be prepared based on the candidates' scaled scores in the respective exam. These scores are normalized across sessions to account for variations in different levels of difficulty. Then, the NTA releases a merit list and assigns an All India Rank to every candidate based on their normalized scores. In case there is a tie, candidates with higher scores in Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Language Comprehension, and General Awareness, respectively will be preferred.
No, the CMAT merit list is not the only criterion for admission to B-Schools. B-Schools may also consider other factors such as academic performance, work experience, group discussion, personal interview performance, etc. while selecting candidates for admission.
