IIM Admission Process 2026
To get admission to IIMs, candidates have to go through several stages, which are elaborated below.
Stage 1: Shortlisting Based on CAT Score
After the CAT result is announced, candidates need to apply for the WAT/GD-PI round at each IIM by following the official notification on its website. Candidates who meet the shortlist cut-off must log in with their CAT IDs to submit their name and CAT score.
Stage 2: Appearing for WAT/GD-PI
From February to April, a writing ability test, group discussion, and personal interview rounds are conducted at designated cities for shortlisted candidates who applied for WAT/GD-PI. These candidates were shortlisted based on their CAT scores and academic record. Selected candidates are sent interview letters to participate in the WAT-GD-PI round.
Stage 3: Calculation of Composite Score and Final Selection
Lastly, a composite score is calculated for each candidate based on eight different parameters. These parameters and their definitions are listed below.
Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
CAT score | The overall percentile score obtained in the CAT exam. |
Graduation Score | The aggregate CGPA/ percentage is obtained in a three-year UG course or equivalent. |
Class 12 Score | The aggregate score in Class 12 or equivalent. |
Class 10 Score | The aggregate score in Class 10 or equivalent. |
WAT/GD-PI | The performance of candidates in WAT/GD-PI is assessed, and marks are allotted accordingly. |
Academic Diversity | To provide equal representation to students from different streams, non-engineering candidates are given extra points. Each campus provides varying points for academic diversity. |
Gender Diversity | To ensure that both genders are equally represented, IIMs award additional points to female and transgender applicants during their selection process. The number of points awarded for gender diversity may vary depending on the campus. |
Work Experience | Candidates with prior work experience can earn extra points in the range of 1 to 5. The number of points awarded depends on the campus, with each campus having its specific range. |

IIM Admission 2026–28 Waitlist Movement | • The waitlist represents the number of seats that may open up after selected candidates withdraw. • If any candidate declines the offer, the seat is passed to the next person on the IIM waitlist. • Waitlist movement gives opportunities to enter top IIMs like IIMA, IIMB, IIMC. • IIM Lucknow and IIM Calcutta typically show high waitlist movement due to many applicants preferring IIM Ahmedabad or IIM Bangalore. |
Key Factors for IIM Shortlisting Criteria 2026 | • Shortlisting emphasizes overall student quality, not just CAT scores. • Minimum required CAT percentile (overall + sectional) ranges from 85–95 percentile depending on the IIM. • Preference is given to candidates with strong academics, diverse academic backgrounds, and female candidates for gender diversity. • Work experience of 2–3 years carries a 5–10% weightage, improving chances for GD/PI/WAT shortlisting. |

CAT Composite Score (Used in Final Selection) | • Composite Score (out of 100) includes: – CAT score (scaled) – Class 10 marks – Class 12 marks – Bachelor’s degree performance – Work experience weightage – WAT and PI performance • Used to prepare the final merit list for all IIMs. |
