List of Engineering Courses in IITs

The Indian Institutes of Technology or IITs are the most aspired technological institutes in India. The fame and glory of IITs are not only confined within India but also known in global scales. Some of the most prominent names related to engineering innovations of today are related to the name of IITs.

There are 23 IITs across India, however, the journey started with IIT Kharagpur in 1951, and other oldest IITs like IIT Bombay (1958), IIT Madras (1959), IIT Kanpur (1959) and IIT Delhi (1961) followed the legacy. All the IITs and their contributions to the technological sector of India will be written in the golden letters in the history of India.

IITs over various courses along with their popular B.Tech with various specialisations. From traditional B.Tech specialisations such as Mechanical, Electrical, Civil as well as new age subject like Artificial Intelligence. Innovation and progress have always been synonymous with the institutes and these institutes file the most number of patents every year. Let us have a look at all the courses offered at IITs along with course duration, eligibility and selection process. If you are looking forward to pursuing higher education from any of the IIMs can find all the details in this article.

List of Most Popular Courses in IITs

The IITs offer a galaxy of courses from bachelor to doctoral and certificate level, the institutes always keep themselves updated and so, there are numerous courses starting from the conventional B.Tech courses to the course of Artificial Intelligence. Following are the list of some of the most popular courses,

Course

Details

B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering

This is one of the most popular courses of IITs, from the last 2-3 years, the top scorers in JEE Advanced are preferring this course for admissions in IITs. This includes the study of computer hardware, software, algorithms, codings and more related to Information Technology which is the need of today. This specialisation also has M.Tech.

B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering

This is one of the most popular streams chosen by the aspirants of IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras. The engineers who want to work in the commercial and defence aviation sector mainly choose this course. This deals with various sectors of aviation, aerodynamics etc.

B.Tech in Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline which is offered by all the IITs in India. B.Tech in Civil Engineering deals with the construction, design and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment such as roads, canals, bridges, airports, dams, sewerage systems, railways, pipelines and structural components of buildings. Most IITs offer M.Tech in Civil engineering as well for masters level studies.

B.Tech in Chemical Engineering

The B.Tech course in Chemical Engineering is another very popular course in IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee. This particular branch of engineering uses principles of chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics and economics to efficiently produce, produce, design, transform and transport energy and materials. Many opt for M.Tech in this particular stream as well for higher studies.

B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering

The stream of Mechanical Engineering has historically been one of the most popular courses in B.Tech. This specialisation deals with providing solutions to mechanical needs such as manufacturing, automobile sectors etc. It involves extensive studies on gears, mechanisms, engines etc. Aspirants for higher studies in this specialisation can also opt for M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering Stream.

BS in Chemistry

This 3-year 6-semester course of Bachelors of Science in Chemistry deals with the basic components of chemistry, chemical structures and several sections of Physical, Organic and Inorganic chemistry. Students can opt for M.S. or M.Sc course in the specialisation post-completion of the BS course.

BS in Mathematics

Bachelor of Science (BS). Mathematics is a 3-year undergraduate (UG) academic degree for those who successfully complete a program in mathematics or related disciplines. This discipline includes a vast portion of mathematics like arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, calculus etc.

BS in Physics

Bachelor of Science (BS) in Physics is an undergraduate (UG) course in Physics. Physics is a natural science that includes the study of matter and its motion through space and time, along with related concepts such as force and energy. This is one of the most aspired courses of science stream not in bachelors but also in Masters Degrees of M.Sc or MS.

Management Courses Offered in IITs

Many IITs, with the aim to convert their technical knowledge into commercial innovation, has launched a department of management studies. The first department of Management studies was opened in IIT Bombay which was followed by some new IITs like IIT Roorkee. The IITs which have a department for management mainly offers MBA and ExMBA courses.

The most popular PG business management course in India is an MBA which is currently offered by IITs like IIT Bombay and IIT Roorkee. The institutes take admissions in the MBA course based on the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted throughout India for MBA admissions. However, the two IITs has a separate cutoff requirement and there is no centralised counselling like JoSAA in engineering, the candidates will have to apply individually to the respective IITs. The admission is given after weightage calculation on the basis of CAT Scores, Group Discussions, Personal Interview, Previous Academic Performance and more parameters.

Other Offbeat Courses Offered by IITs

Apart from engineering and management, some IITs also have a galaxy of offbeat courses not only in science and engineering, but they also range from humanities to law. These courses are quite impressive to take up but very few people know about these courses, so check out some of these courses from the table given below,

Entrance Exams Accepted for IITs for the Courses

In the most common B.Tech courses in IITs, the students are bound to crack JEE Advanced examination which is also known as IIT JEE. Students who clear JEE Mains with a suitable minimum mark are only eligible for taking up B.Tech degree admissions in IITs with B.Tech in all the specialisations.

The candidates who are willing to go for the M.Tech courses in IIT must pass the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) examination which is conducted by different IITs each year for admission in M.Tech courses. GATE is also accepted for M.Sc admissions in IIT.

Similarly, CAT examination is mandatory for an MBA in the IITs who are offering the course and CLAT is necessary for LL.B admissions in IIT Kharagpur.

The technical knowledge given by IITs are at par with the colleges of international standards. For this reason, IIT is said to be a global standard institution and the students have to go through a rigorous process for securing admission in IITs.

Are you feeling lost and unsure about what career path to take after completing 12th standard?
