Sculptor

Sculptors are responsible for carving figures, statues, monuments, and other imaginative designs in abstract forms by chiselling stone, carving wood, modelling clay, or any other material either directly from the original or models prepared by him or the Modeller. They are also required to select materials such as stone, wood, clay, ivory, marble, wax, etc. according to the need. These sculptors sketch designs and make scale models in wax or plaster and transfer measurements to block. Sculptors are required to carve and shape blocks with the use of different tools, thus achieving unity and harmony.

Sculptors are also known as Sthapatis if they are involved in designing, carving, and drilling holes in stones to make Idols for temples from mental perception as described in ‘Shastras’ (holy scriptures of Hindus) by the use of hammers and chisels only. They could be required to sharpen tools by hand or machine and inscribe decorative lettering and monumental sculptures on models. In addition to that, they may have to make clay or wax models and cast them in Plaster of Paris or bronze.

Modeller (Except Stone)

Modellers are required to make clay or Plaster of Paris models of pottery, porcelain, and models of anatomical studies according to drawings and specifications, for mass production. Their job profile includes preparing clay, wax, or Plaster of Paris foundation. These modellers may create their designs and carve material, using shaping tools, lathe, or potter's wheel to resemble the model to the exact size and other specifications. They may also prepare models of important persons by observing a person's facial expression and features and carving and shaping material to the required size and form.

Stone Modeller

Stone Statue Maker carves out features, statues, models, idols, and other artistic designs on stone slabs, blocks, or pillars for the construction of temples, monuments, fountains, buildings, etc. using hand tools. They study the nature of carvings to be done from drawings, photographs, written descriptions, etc, or as per the instructions from Sthapathi or other appropriate authorities. In addition to that, they cut and drill holes as designed using saw blades and hand drills or with hammers and chisels depending on specifications and nature of work done particularly for carvings of idols and images meant for temples. They brush off the dust and waste material from objects and sprinkle water on them, as and when necessary while carving. These carvings include carving numbers and letters and creating designs. They may also make clay models of statues or images to be carved to ensure accuracy and facilitate working.

Commercial Artist

Commercial Artists are required to prepare designs for advertising articles or drawing illustrations for books, magazines, posters, charts, hoardings, etc. in suitable columns. They carefully go through the specifications and discuss the details and costs with the client. They determine the subject matter in consultation with the client and draw designs and sketches with or without colour to the desired effect. In addition to that, they execute approved designs in required mediums such as paints, oils, watercolours, etc.

Visual Artists
