LSAT India Scholarships: Highlights, Eligibility, Guidelines

While law aspirants need to pay top dollar to finance their higher education, LSAC Global offers two scholarship opportunities to LSAT India candidates. LSAC Global, an LLP of the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) which is conducting LSAT India 2023, believes in keeping potential students out of financial pressure.

To make law colleges accessible to bright students, LSAC Global offers a scholarship program to the LSAT India test-takers every year to fulfil their potential. 

For the second consecutive year, LSAC Global is awarding the LSAT India Topper Scholarship along with a new scheme of scholarship known as the Shamnad Basheer Access to Justice Scholarship. Both the scholarships will cover tuition and halls of residence fees for the first year of a law programme at one of the LSAC Global Law Alliance colleges up to the maximum amount allocated.

The LSAT India Topper Scholarship can be availed by a candidate who scores the highest on the LSAT India and the other opportunity can be availed by any test taker who submits the winning entry in an essay competition.

About LSAT India Scholarship Opportunities 2023

There are two scholarship schemes that are awarded to test takers of LSAT India. Given below is all the information you need to know about them:

The LSAT India Topper Scholarship 2023

LSAG India LLP is the sponsor of the LSAT India Scholarship (also known as the “Topper Scholarship”) which will be awarded to the LSAT Indiacandidate who achieves the highest score on the LSAT India exam. It offers up to ₹4 lac and covers tuition and halls of residence fees for the first year of the law programme, up to the maximum amount allocated.

Any unutilised amount will be carried forward to the next year of the participating law college.

Shamnad Basheer Access to Justice Scholarship 2023

The Shamnad Basheer Access to Justice Scholarship is awarded to the 2023 LSAT India applicant who submits the winning entry in an essay competition. It was introduced in 2020 in memory of an influential lawyer and pioneering academic, Professor Shamnad Basheer. Professor Bashir founded Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education (IDIA), which is a non-profit organization that empowers underprivileged students in India by giving them admission to quality legal education.

LSAT India 2023 Application Procedure

Candidates do not have to apply for LSAT India 2023 scholarship separately, they just need to fill up the application form for the exam given below:

  • Candidates need to visit the official website of Discover Law to apply for LSAT India.
  • In the top right corner of the page, click on ‘Register for LSAT India’.
  • Once the new page opens, select the sign-up option for further processing. 
  • Enter your details such as name, country, contact number, email ID and password to fill up the application form.
  • Select signup and as the form will appear on the screen, fill rest of the details.
  • Upload important documents such as a scanned photograph, scanned signature, previous years’ marks sheet, etc. 
  • Complete the application form, review the details and submit.
  • Take a printout of the form for further reference. 

LSAT India Shamnad Basheer Access to Justice Scholarship Guidelines 2023

Candidates will be given a topic wherein, the arguments with reasons for ‘against or for’ should be given on the following:

  • Having a legal professional category (lawyers, judges, etc.)
  • Characterized by diversity of gender, caste, wealth status, language, and regional individuality makes for a more just legal system.

The guidelines for the submission of the Shamnad Basheer Access to Justice Scholarship essay are as follows:

  • The candidates need to mail their entry to discoverawscholarship@LSAC.org with “Diversity Essay” in the subject line. 
  • They must also include a cover page with details such as the title of the essay, their full name, telephone number, a valid email address and mailing address.
  • All the essays must be up to 1,200 words, double-spaced with one-inch margins, in MS Word format in 12-point font. 
  • It should be saved to a file with the naming format as [Last name of the candidate], [First Name of the candidate] [Underscore] [A Shortened Name of Essay] (e.g., Patel, Akash_Right to Privacy).

A panel shall select one winning submission from all the entries received. The essay will be selected based on the following:

  • The essay will be evaluated on the basis of the quality and clarity of the content, its persuasiveness, and the quality of writing in full compliance with all procedures of the competition.

Eligibility for LSAT India Topper Scholarship 2023

The following eligibility requirements must be fulfilled for LSAT India Topper Scholarship 2023.

  • Must have taken LSAT India 2023.
  • Must have scored the highest on the test.
  • Must be an Indian citizen.
  • Must have successfully qualified the senior secondary school or 10+2 exam from a recognized educational board
  • Shall not receive a scholarship from any other source for the first year of the law programme.

Eligibility for Shamnad Basheer Access to Justice Scholarship 2023

The following eligibility requirements must be fulfilled for Shamnad Basheer Access to Justice Scholarship 2023.

  • Must have taken LSAT India 2023
  • Must have been accepted to the 5-year LL.B. programme of a participating college that accepts the LSAT India test scores.
  • Must have submitted original work (all submissions will be checked for plagiarism).
  • Must be an Indian citizen.
  • Must have successfully completed the senior secondary school or 10 + 2 equivalent exam from an educational board duly recognised in India.

The scholarship amount shall be utilised in the following ways:

  • To cover the basic hostel fees, annual tuition fees, and library fees for the first year of the course.
  • Any remaining amount from the first year of the law course can be rolled over to the subsequent years, subject to terms and conditions.
  • The scholarship amount shall not be considered an annual amount and is instead an aggregate amount that shall be paid to or on behalf of the candidate.
  • If the fees for the programme exceed the amount of the scholarship, the balance amount shall be borne solely by the candidate and he/she shall be responsible to bear any non-tuition fee items for the course.
  • The scholarship amount will not include any admission acceptance/security deposit amount payable to the participating college.
  • If the fees for the course are payable semester or trimester-wise, then the amount will be equally divided per semester or trimester.

Shamnad Basheer Access to Justice Scholarship 2023

The winners of the essay contest will be awarded the scholarship in the following manner:

  • The winner will receive a cash prize of INR 2 Lakh and the winning submissions will be published on the official website.

  • The sponsor shall provide a tax deduction certificate to the applicant to enable him/ her to avail of the tax credit if any tax is deducted or withheld by the scholarship sponsor.

Documents Required for LSAT India Scholarship Acceptance

The aspirant will be required to communicate his/her acceptance of the scholarship within 30 days of the offer, along with the documents given below:

  • Your LSAT India 2023 test score report.
  • A self-attested identity and address proof.
  • Your Permanent Account Number (PAN) card.
  • Your self-attested mark sheet for 10+2 equivalent or senior secondary school from a recognized Board in India.
  • Proof of admission in the five-year law programme at an LSAC participating college.
  • Contact information on the financial aid office of the concerned college and its bank details.
  • A certificate, stating that you are not availing and will not avail of any other scholarship from any other source is duly signed by you and your guardian.

To secure admission to the B.A LLB programme at Swami Vivekananda Law College, you must have passed 10+2 with at least 45% marks (SC/ ST category candidates - 40%). The programme is 5 years long and divided into 10 semesters. It has an intake of 120 students. The programme is affiliated to CCS University, Meerut and approved by the Bar Council of India (BCI).
