Will NEET PG 2026 be Conducted in Single or Two Shifts?

According to the previous years’ trends, it is safe to say that the NEET PG 2026 exam will be conducted in a single shift. The NBEMS conducted the NEET PG 2024 in two shifts to accommodate the large number of appearing students. It comprised two separate question papers and exam timings on the same date. This decision was made in view of the limited test centres and to ensure better supervision. However, it posed many difficulties, leading to the disruption in the exam’s integrity.

Therefore, in 2025, the Supreme Court ordered the NBEMS to conduct the NEET PG entrance exam in a single shift every year. Adhering to the court’s decision, the NEET PG 2025 Exam was held on August 3, 2025, in a single shift. Keeping this in mind, many students and experts are of the opinion that the NBEMS will continue to conduct the NEET PG 2026 Exam in a single shift. In case there are any changes regarding the same, an official statement will be released by the conducting body.

Changes Expected in NEET PG 2026

Here are a few changes expected in the NEET PG 2026 exam:
  • Single vs Two Shifts: NBEMS will clarify in the coming days if the exam will be held in a single shift or split into two shifts.

  • Exam Date Adjustment: Depending on the past few years' trends, NEET PG 2026 could see a slight shift in exam month compared to previous years.

  • Admit Card & Result Schedule: Dates may be released earlier than usual to give aspirants more clarity.

  • Merger with NExT: Discussions around replacing NEET PG with the NExT exam have been ongoing for a long time, but any official confirmation is awaited for 2026.

While the reports of NEET PG and FMGE being replaced with NExT are making the rounds, the chances of it happening are likely less. Among the few expected changes in the upcoming NEET PG exam, the NBEMS may increase the total number of test cities and exam centres to accommodate more applicants. The exam is expected to be held in the first few weeks of August 2026. Once the entrance exam has been conducted, the NEET PG 2026 Results will be announced within a month. Those who successfully qualify in the entrance exam will then be eligible to participate in NEET PG Counselling.

It’s unlikely, but not fully impossible, depending on many factors. MD Paediatrics is a “clinical” branch and usually has very high cutoffs in government colleges. Based on past year cutoffs in Karnataka, for MD Paediatrics in government colleges, the closing ranks are much lower than 20,000 in many rounds. For example, in KIMS Hubli, the closing rank in one round was 5,111 for Paediatrics. Also in Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health, for OBC category, the cutoff ranks have been in the few thousands in past rounds.
