The 2016 NIFT written entrance examination was held on February 14th for Bachelor of Design, M.Des and Bachelor of Fashion Technology. The aim of the test was to test their colour sensibilities and aesthetics while also testing them on their product designing skills.

Based on the choice, all eligible candidates had to appear in a written entrance examination at the Examination Centres opted by them. The written entrance examination is designed to test the knowledge, skill and aptitude of the candidates for the programme opted. There is no negative marking.

On the basis of result of written test GAT and CAT, shortlisted B.Des candidates will be called for second test called Situation Test. For B.F.Tech candidates, GAT will be the final test for selection. The candidates for M.Des will take GAT and CAT. On the basis of the result of GAT and CAT, in the case of M.Des and GAT in the case of M.F Tech and MFM, candidates will be called for Group Discussion/Personal Interview (GD/PI).

NIFT 2016 CREATIVE ABILITY TEST (CAT) Analysis: This test is administered to judge the intuitive ability, power of observation in concept development and design ability of the candidate. An important aspect of the test is the creative and innovative use of colour and illustration skills.
The Creative Ability Test (CAT) had three questions to be attempted.

The first question was based on colour sensibilities: The students had a choice of four themes from which they were required to attempt any two. They were to show the progression from one to another only through colours which were to be filled in a series of 10 blocks. The choices were (a) Cocoon to butterfly (b) Dawn to Night (c) Spring to autumn and (d) Shiny metallic to Rust. The visible changes were to be shown that occur in each process only through the expression of colours. This was a 30 marks question.

The second question provided the students with 4 set of choices in which they had to attempt any two. This question again was to test the psychological and emotional connect of the students with colours based on his or her colour interpretation. This had to be done in the format provided which comprised of seven concentric circles. The themes were (a) Sorrow (b) Happiness (c) Rebellious (d) Astonishment. It was a 30 marks question,

In the third question was of 40 marks and the students were specifically instructed NOT to colour or shade. In this question, students had to design 4 products, giving as much three dimensional details as possible, they had to make their designs on any one of the shapes out of triangle, square, circle and rectangle. All the four products were to be designed from the one shape chosen. The categories asked were (a) A textile print (b) A footwear product (c) A table utility product (d) A clothing utility product.

The NIFT CAT 2016 was similar for both Bachelors & Masters in Design course admissions.

General Ability Test (GAT)

1) Quantitative Ability: This sub-test was to test the quantitative ability of the candidates. The sub test consisted of questions on Addition, Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Percentage, Rate of Interest, Work and Task, Ratio and Proportion, and Distance.

2) Communication Ability and English Comprehension: This was to test the language ability of the candidates in day to day communication in English. It includes questions on synonyms, antonyms, words with corresponding meanings, singular, plural, one word substitutes, idioms and phrases, correct spellings, comprehend a situation from a given passage etc.

3) Analytical Ability and Logical Ability: This was designed to test the candidate’s capacity for inference and logic from the given information and to evaluate the candidate’s ability to identify a given problem and apply reasoning in solving the core issues of the problem. Concepts and practice of creative and lateral thinking are likely to be useful.

4) General Knowledge and Current Affairs: This was designed to test the candidate’s general knowledge and current affairs.

5) Case Study: This was based on a situation of an industry environment. It helps to evaluate the candidate’s managerial ability.

The comprehension was on the tougher side of all sections and saw eight passages of moderate length but the language was fairly comprehensible. Reasoning and English language were on the expected line. This year the business awareness questions dominated the general knowledge section as such with questions from advertisements regarding company names, products, brand ambassadors, tag lines etc. Questions on personalities were also there.

Creative Ability Test (CAT) appeared more comfortable to the aspirants as compared to GAT. As the relative weightage of CAT and GAT from one course to other, a permutation and combinations of the scores in these two section will be at work while getting a call for the next level.
