Factors to Consider while Selecting Distance Learning Chemistry Colleges
Fees - Distance learning courses are usually much more affordable, whereas private / semi-private ones (or paid institutes acting as facilitators) can be pricey.
Recognition/ Validity - Always ensure the distance / ODL / correspondence programme is UGC / DEB recognised. Else, the degree may not be accepted for Government jobs or further studies (MSc, PSU, UPSC etc.). IGNOU & NSOU are safe in this aspect.
Duration & Flexibility - Many programmes enable you to complete within 3 years but give up to 5-6 years to finish. This can be a benefit if you have other commitments. IGNOU for instance lets you take up to 6 years in many cases.
Practical/ Lab Work - Chemistry involves lab/ practical components. Distance courses often require you to participate in lab sessions at study centres or regional centres. Gather information about how they manage labs and whether you can access them.
UPSC Eligibility - UPSC does accept degrees from distance/ ODL universities as long as the degree is recognised. But it is always a good choice to double check whether your optional subject is permitted (if you plan to take Chemistry as optional) and whether UPSC has any specific criteria.
IGNOU can be considered to be a good choice to pursue BSc Chemistry in distance mode. In case you prefer a state open university with a good curriculum and affordable fees, opt for NSOU. Some of the good options in South India are Bharathiar University & Annamalai University.
