Part-Time Work for Students in Canada

If you are planning to work on-campus or off-campus in Canada, you must get a Social Insurance Number (SIN) first.

Foreign students working on campus do not require any special work permit. Universities participating in an off-campus work permit programme can authorise their students to find part-time work elsewhere.

After that, once you have completed six months as an international student, you can take up a part-time job for up to 20 hours a week. During semester breaks, you are allowed to work full-time for up to 40 hours a week during semester breaks. However, if you are enrolled in an intensive course, universities allow you to work for a maximum of 12 hours.

Work Permit after Studying in Canada

Canada is one of the best countries for international students to stay back after graduation and find work. Part of the reason for this is the Express Entry Immigration System, which gives additional points to students who have graduated from a Canadian University.

To find work in Canada, the foreign nationals will have to apply for Work Permit. An international student who completes his studies from a Designated Learning Institute (DLI) of Canada can apply for a Post Graduate Work Permit(PGWP). It is a programme launched by the Canada Government to allow international students to apply for work permits after receiving the mark sheet and certificate from the university. 

In Canada, any international student who has the following are eligible to apply for Work Permit: 

  • a valid student visa, 
  • proof of completion of a full-time graduate programme from a DLI
  • spent a minimum of 8 months in the aforesaid programme 
  • The programme he/she has studied must be eligible for PGWP
  • applied within 90 days (up to 180 days can be considered in some cases) of completing graduation is eligible to apply for PGWP.

 

Duration of Work Permit in Canada

The duration of the work permit that may be issued to you in Canada depends on the duration of your programme of study. Students with a course duration of 8 months to 2 years are eligible to receive a work permit of the same length as the length of their study. Students with a course duration of more than 2 years can get a work permit of up to 3 years.

In case a student has completed more than one programme of studies, he/she is eligible to receive a  work permit of length which is the total duration of the two programmes. 

Work Permit  Processing Time in Canada 

Most of the work permit applications are cleared within 7 weeks of applying. However, depending on the location where you have filed the application, in addition to several other factors, it may take longer. Not only do people with a Canadian student permit find it easier to get a work permit in Canada but they also have good chances of obtaining Permanent Resident status.

How to Apply for Post Graduate Work Permit in Canada?

If you are already staying in Canada then you can follow the guidelines given below to apply for Work Permit in Canada:

Step 1: Meet the Requirements

Before you apply for a work permit in Canada, you must make sure to meet the eligibility criteria and have all that you need to apply for it. You can apply online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website, the official government of Canada website. 

Step 2: Read the Instructions Carefully 

You must read the instructions carefully before completing the application form. You must also answer some questions before uploading the form.

The guidelines to complete each section and field will be available while you proceed with the online application form.

Step 3: Complete the Application Form 

In order to access the application form online, you need to create an account on the IRCC website. The first- time user must create an account on the CIC website. Once an account has been created, the user can log in to the account and follow the further instructions to apply for a work permit. 

Once an account is created you can sign in to the account, complete and submit your application.

Step 4: Pay the Fees 

The fees include the work permit fee, biometric fee and Open work permit holder fee. The work permit fee amount is $155, open work permit holder fee is $100 and the biometric fee is $85. So, the total fee is $340.

You will be asked to make payment of the fees at the end of the application. 

Documents Required to Apply for  Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada 

Students who want to apply for a Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) must have an Official Certificate and Transcript from the institution to confirm that the student has completed the programme. 

The Transcript must mention the name of the course, code of the programme and length of the programme completed.

Q. Can I work on-campus while studying in Canada?

A. You can work on campus once your studies begin in Canada. As an international student, you are allowed to take part part-time only if your study permit lists a condition that you are allowed to work on- or off-campus. On-campus jobs allow you to work at all the buildings on the institute campus. 

Q. Can I work in Canada even if I do not have a work permit? 

A. You can work in Canada without a work permit provided you meet the following conditions:
