History, Affiliations & Rankings

The University of British Columbia is a top-ranked university in Canada, established in 1915 and widely known for learning, research and teaching. The university is governed by various governing bodies including the Board of Governors (BOG), Council of Senates, ACU, APRU, among others. It ranks 13th out of 1,115 institutions worldwide in delivering on the UN SDGs. According to Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2022, the university is ranked 34th and is one of the three Canadian universities in the top 50. In the 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) rankings, UBC ranked 42nd globally and second in Canada.

Infrastructure, Campus & Courses

The University of British Columbia has two major campuses situated in Vancouver and Kelowna in the Okanagan Valley. The Vancouver campus includes 12 faculties and the Okanagan campus is comprised of seven. While the Vancouver campus is home to over 44,000 undergraduate and around 10,000 graduate students, the Okanagan campus hosts over 9,000 students overall. UBC also has other prominent sites including the UBC Robson Square set in the kaleidoscopic heart of Vancouver, Centre for Digital Media, Faculty of Medicine spread across British Columbia and the Asia Pacific Regional Office. The university offers a number of courses across fields such as business and economics, education, engineering and technology, history, law, media and fine arts, among others. 

Accomplishments & Alumni

To date, the UBC has conferred over 370,000 degrees to alumni from 148 countries. Among the thousands of reputed alumni of UBC include three Canadian prime ministers, 8 Nobel laureates, 63 Olympic medalists and 71 Rhodes Scholars. The university prides itself on having received research funding worth $759.1 million for a total of 10,116 projects. UBC ties for first globally for industry and innovation impact. It also ranks third in the world in taking action to combat climate change and its impacts. In Canada, the university tops the rankings for its research on institutional approaches to sustainability.

With 20.9% international students at UBC Okanagan and 27.2% at UBC Vancouver, the University of British Columbia is known to be truly international.
