History, Affiliations & Rankings

The history of the university dates back to 1903 when it was established as Victoria College, affiliated with McGill University. It took a charter in 1963 for the college to be converted into an autonomous university under the anime University of Victoria. Sitting on the adjoining borders of Oak Bay and Saanich, British Columbia its establishment followed the terms and provisions similar to that of the University of Toronto. In the initial years, the university only catered to Arts and Humanities but today its campus offers a diverse range of course programs. It is ranked among the top 1% of the Canadian universities and has affiliations with the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society (CAIMS), Banff International Research Station (BIRS), Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) and American Mathematics Society (AMS) among many others. The University of Victoria was honoured as the inspiration behind the name of the asteroid 150145 UVic.

Infrastructure, Campus and Courses

Originally designed by Wurster, Bernardi & Emmons, the campus is divided into two parts. The inner ring or the academic ring is formed by the various academic buildings situated in a perfect circle of radius of 600m. The rest of the campus or the area beyond this ring houses other amenities of the campus such as cultural clubs, sports facilities, stores, residence halls, etc. The campus offers to its batch of over 20,000 students 160 graduate programs and undergraduate programs from nine streams. There are provisions of residence villages which are lass with facilities like pools, gymnasium, newspaper circulation, apartments and township, etc. Apart from the diverse academics and facilities, sports and athletics, art and community clubs are also promoted and supported by the university. University has its own radio frequency and societies each for its undergraduate (UVSS) and graduate students (GSS).

Accomplishments and Alumni

UVic is known for its numerous contributions to government research programs, and host research stations in relation to VENUS and NEPTUNE studies. The institution is a permanent member of Bamfield Marine Research Station and Vancouver Island Technology Park. It also hosts the Centre of Law for legal research and studies and has assisted the government in the modification of the SEOS Oceanic Vessel. The institute has been the alma mater of names such as Lori Hallier, Eva Markvoort, Jeff Mallet, Stuart Butterfield, Barbara Hall, George Abbott, Laurel Schafer, Robert Campbell Aitken, Kristen Barnes, Stephanie Dixon, Lauren Woolstencroft, and others. The university has an affiliation with 7 Guggenheim Fellows, 2 Killam Prize winners, 79 Fellows of Royal Society of Canada, 14 Order of Canada members and 11 Rhodes Scholars.

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

The university has an international student population of 21% which represents over 110 countries. There are numerous fraternities, sororities and communities administering within the university. A residence village is a separate place within the UVic campus. The institution is known to be supportive of the LGBTQ community and movements and has its pioneers included in its Libraries and Museums through Transgender Archives. Additionally, the university has Career Opportunity affiliations with top companies such as Amazon and Google and also provides guidance with relation to skill development, resume building and co-op careers. The Institution also guides students in relation to Careers with the Federal Government.
