Entrance Tests for Five year integrated Law course at a glance

Class XII exams is over in almost every Board. Now it is time to wait for the result. But between the last paper of the Board exam and the day results will be declared, most of the students fight their most crucial battle of the student life- the selection of the course that would shape their career. During this period, students try their hands at various entrance exams and secure the coveted seat at an institution of their dream.

While for science students the task is more or less cut out- most of them opt engineering or medical as their first choice; at the same time, they can choose from a list of varied types of courses. However, for the students of Arts or Commerce, choices are not as varied as the ones for science students. But that should no way dampen their mood or courage.

One of the courses that is suitable to all, irrespective of their streams in XII, is 5-year integrated law course. In my earlier article Explore Law as a New Age career , I have elucidated the benefits of the career in law. The best part of this course is it does not demand any specialized knowledge of any subject to get admission. Hence, every XII student with a minimum prescribed level of aptitude for such demanding career can go for this.

The following table provides a glimpse of the major 5-year law courses across India:

Apart from a traditional lawyer’s career in courtroom, a law graduate can take his/her career to any one or more of the following areas:

  • Judges: Offers judgments after conducting the court proceedings
  • Human Rights Lawyer: Specializes in the human rights related laws
  • Legal Analyst: Works for corporate firms or law firms and advises companies regarding laws pertaining to their operation.
  • Document Drafting Lawyer: Specializes in drafting various legal documents.
  • Legal Journalist: Covers crime beats, legal proceedings in courts.
  • Legal Advisor: Offers consultancy to companies and individuals
  • Public Prosecutor: Works for the government and in close coordination with the police.
  • Cyber Lawyer: Once internet has entered every sphere of our life, both business and crime in the cyber space has grown stupendously. Cyber lawyer has expertise in these spheres.

As the career in law present quite a challenging as well as rewarding life to the aspirant, the competition for getting into the top colleges is getting tougher day by day. We can benefit if you know the requirement of these exams.

CLAT is by far the most sought after entrance test for 5-year law course. Like any other aptitude test CLAT also checks your aptitude for the legal profession. A student is tested on the following:

Exam Topics Total Questions

English including Comprehension 40

General Knowledge and Current Affairs 50

Elementary Mathematics (Numerical Ability) 20

Legal Aptitude 50

Logical Reasoning 40

Total 200

Most of the law entrance tests follow more or less this test pattern. Some of the tests do not have mathematics as subject but the tests definitely do comprise other areas. The number of questions in each section may vary in these tests but overall pattern remains same. Hence, if a student decides to prepare for CLAT, then he or she can conveniently appear in other exams also.

Preparation Strategy

One interesting fact is that the competition in CLAT or other law exams isn’t as tough as that of most of the entrance examinations in the field of Engineering and Medical. However, a student aiming for one of the best law schools must have a clear and effective strategy in his/her mind right from the beginning and should focus on practicing from diverse but useful sources. Last but not the least, they should keep themselves updated of all current affairs happening around the World all through his journey.

You should understand that not all subjects have equal weightage. Legal Reasoning and General Knowledge have 50 questions each. But Logical Reasoning and Verbal Ability (English including Comprehension) have 40 questions each. Remember that even Legal Reasoning paper has a good number of Legal GK questions. This means GK including Current Affairs has very high weightage and anyone having command over GK can not only score with ease but also with less time. Scoring Verbal Ability is easier than Logical Reasoning. An efficient preparation of English will also help you in Critical Reasoning as well as Legal Reasoning, in addition to English. Even a good preparation of Mathematics will also help you in Analytical Reasoning (Puzzles, coding-decoding etc) as skills require to master both these subjects are largely similar. The strategy should be to devote the maximum time to master subjects with compound effect (i.e. Mathematics and English). For improving scores in less time, you need to solve as many Mock tests as possible giving enough time to yourself for analyzing these Mocks.
