IPU CET (Law) 2016 Analysis

IP University, Delhi conducted Common Entrance Test (CET)- 2016 on April 17, 2016 from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm for admission to its law programmes in 11 participating institutes. For students of Delhi NCR, it was the first major law entrance examination of the year in UG segment. The paper comprised 150 questions from four sections – Logical Reasoning, English, General Knowledge, and Legal Aptitude. The questions were to be attempted in 150 minutes. Each question had four marks and each wrong attempt had a penalty of one mark and each unattempted question was to be awarded zero mark. The pattern of the paper remained the same as previous years. Each of the four sections has more or less equal weightage.

The detailed break-up of the sections is as follows:

Overall, this year's paper was slightly more difficult than that of the last year.

SECTION WISE ANALYSIS OF THE PAPER

The General knowledge
The overall difficulty level of the section: tough. This section was difficult primarily due to the predominance of static GK questions. The General knowledge section was dominated by static GK questions. The questions on GK focused more on science and computers and, surprisingly, almost skipped the polity section, a common for most law schools. The questions like the following were there:

*who was the richest man of the year 2014?

*Which is the oldest National Park in India?

* What is the extension of the MS Word files in the Operating System Windows 2007?

*Who won the FIFA Ballon d'Or award for the year 2015?
*On the surface of a lake, you’ll find which bacteria?
*Email uses which server client?

The number of current affairs questions in this section was surprisingly very few. The overall difficulty level of the GK questions was moderate to difficult even though Current Affairs questions were quite easy.

Legal Aptitude

The surprise of the pack: No Legal principle question. The Legal Aptitude had facts based questions and Legal Knowledge questions. Some questions appeared to be from Legal Reasoning (Legal principle), but a closer look would tell that they were legal awareness questions. Of the 37 questions asked in this section, 25-26 questions were from knowledge-mostly static legal knowledge. The rest of the questions were fact based. The questions were pretty straight but lengthy and required a bit of reading. The overall difficulty level of the Legal Aptitude questions wes moderate

Logical Reasoning

The Logical Reasoning section had 38 questions and was easy to solve. However, the section was dominated by Analytical Reasoning section with around 29-30 questions from this type. The questions were mostly from arrangement, coding-decoding, cubes, change of symbols and numeral analogies. There were few questions from Verbal Logic section. The students were asked to form meaningful words from a given set. There were no questions from deductive logic, syllogisms, or strong/weak arguments. Hence, this section was quite easy. An attempt of 33-34 will be considered a good attempt.

English

The English section was also quite easy. This section had 38 questions. There were two reading comprehension passages with 2 questions each. Both the passages small. The questions were direct in nature. Questions on Vocabulary (2 to 3 questions), Idioms and Phrases (5 to 6 questions), Parts of Speech (4 to 5 questions)) were quite easy and manageable. There were 5-6 questions from sentence correction. There were 4-5 questions on sentence jumble and some questions were fill in the blanks type. In this section questions were was easy and an attempt of 34-36 will be considered to be good. Overall, the difficulty level of the whole paper was moderate, and an attempt of 116-126, with an overall accuracy of 90%, should be considered good.
