Overview

The People’s Republic of China is a large-scale provider of educational services to foreign students. One of the major reasons for choosing China as the destination for higher education is the increasing levels of investment in tertiary education in the country. China reached its target of spending almost 4% of its GDP on education in 2012. Over the last decade, the number of universities and colleges located in China have doubled. At present, there are 2,900 higher education institutes in China. By 2020, China wants at least 100 of its universities with world-class standards.  In recent years, China has emerged as the fifth largest country in terms of the number of international students. In 2018, it had a total of 4,92,185 foreign students who wanted to pursue their studies from China.

Education System in China

Scope for International Students in China

The number of international students seeking enrolment in Chinese higher learning institutions has been increasing every year. Over 200 universities across China are authorized to enrol international students. In recent years, the number of international students pursuing higher education in China has increased by as much as 30%.

Before going into the level-wise higher education system in China, it is advisable to have a look at the public and the private education system in China.

State Education System in China

The state or public education system in China is based on a premier selection structure, which means the score of the national-level entrance exam decides the fate of students. Every year, almost 4,50,000 engineering students graduate from public universities in China and 50,000 graduates with a master’s degree. 

Private Education System in China

Private higher learning institutions in China also play a dominant role in providing quality education. These institutions maintain educational standards that are on par with those in public institutions. Private higher learning institutions have also been successful in attracting a significant number of international students over the years.

Chinese higher-education system is divided into three levels. These have been explained below.

Level 1 - Undergraduate: China provides multifarious options to students wanting to opt for Bachelor education. The programs/subjects range widely from Economics, Accounting, Information Technology, Architecture, etc. There is not a single field of study which is not present in China.

The undergraduate course is generally for 2 years at the minimum and reaches a maximum duration of 5 years. The session starts from the month of September every year.

Level 2 - Master’s Degree: China’s higher education system is more or less similar to that of the US. It is an evident thing and a rule that a candidate needs to have a bachelor degree before they want to pursue a Post Grad from China. Usually, courses are 2 to 3 year long, depending upon the field of study and university’s norms. 
Getting the Master’s degree from China is quite affordable and becomes the major factor of interest to students. 

Level 3 - Doctorate Degree: Number of students interested in pursuing PhD from China has elevated to 157,108 in 2018 as per an education website. The PhD length is usually 3 to 4 years and the costs of the fees start from approx Yuan 17,000 to Yuan 54,000. The academic year starts from March to January.
